I picked up this short block today, guy said it was "buildable" and the price was right. So I get it home and start looking for casting numbers and this was all I could find. It is a roller block so that should be a clue as to the year. Lifter valley has "XXX" castings and a "Ford" oval but no other numbers. Most web sources are good about decoding numbers but not so much when it comes to locating them on the block. Any help would be appreciated...
Well you did say ANY help? And its not much, just something to keep in mind that you probably knew anyway. My next project is a '56 panel and I have a 302/5.0 HO out of a '92 LSC, the HO apparently has a different firing order then the ordinary 302, so the HO must have at least a different camshaft. I would guess that (Murphy works overtime in my life) it would be possible (probable) to mismatch the parts?
Somewhere along the line Ford moved the block casting numbers for the 302 from a straight line above the starter to the bellhousing web near the same location. They're a little tougher to find, but try looking here...
John, are you talking about numbers that look like this, here? That's not a casting number, but a partial vin from the donor vehicle.
It's been awhile since I looked but went and checked a conversation I had on another site and the numbers were cast above the starter not stamped. My stamped ones were on the top as in your picture
F1SE is 1991 Thunderbird/Cougar, block may have been used in other cars as well.
Casting numbers are foundry marks, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.
Tbirds/ Cougars used the same ho blocks as the mustangs.
