yet another cat question...or questions rather

ok, i have read all the posts concerning cat converters for the past year, i have read through my haynes and chiltons, and have searched online for direct cat replacements for the stock ones on my 1990 F-150 w/ 5.0 EFI ...i cannot seem to find a satisfactory answer to my questions of
a) what converters are there that will replace the two that i have stock with one?
b) theres a lot of hype about high flow, is this true or not?
c) if so, what brands are not good to go with for cats?
frustrated about posting yet "another" cat question...
thanks in advance
eric

High Flows do flow better than stock. Also sound much nicer. If you're looking for your truck you would want a cat that is certified as 3 way with air, 2-1 replacement. The 3 way means the first CAT cleans up the NOx and the second CAT deals with CO and HC with air injection infront of it to aide in the reaction. 2-1 replacement is simply you can replace both stockers with a single aftermarket CAT. CATCO seems to be a good source. You can get direct fit setups with the whole y-pipe and CAT. These are in the $200 and up range. There are also universal fit and universal fit with air tubes. These run $50- $100. If you can fabricate a pipe to go were the first CAT is to make a single outlet, you could go with a universal fit with an airtube. You would need to attach the airtube to the CAT. Not a real big deal.

The only true two for one replacement will be This. Yes, high flows work! (I have that Bassani pipe in question). If you are going to go do all that work removing the stock cats and installing one, why not do a simple bolt in? The pipes are larger than stock, and the catalytic convertor on it is a true 3" flow through, and its 50 state legal. Bassani has super high quality and designs. Just an idea.

Yes, it retains all factory bungs. This pipe is made to be a perfect bolt in, so if youre current exhaust works with your stock Y pipe, then this will fit fine. What is the size of the catback (rather, the pipe that leads from the Y to the muffler)? Bassani should include a step up adapter to 3".

its not a catback just a 40 series flow, and the pipe connected is slightly larger than stock. it is welded about midway between the second cat and the muffler...i dunno what the stock pipe size is for my truck...

I think the stock might have been 2.25" (at least my 96 bronco was, and I believe the F/Bronco used the same diameters). The whole pipe is slightly larger, or just the step up to the opening of the muffler? The bassani is a slip fit style, and comes with some hefty clamping bands.

the whole pipe leading to the muffler after the weld between the muffler/cat conv. when i got the new muffler they added a 2ft section leading to the muffler...slip fit meaning i slip it over a portion of the pipe and clamp down with the bands?

You would probably need the supplied adapter (i think its 2.5-3, or something. I dont remember exactly because I didnt have to use it). That adapter should slide over the end of the Y pipe, then you clamp it. For a 100% accurate answer, you should get the pipe diameter then give bassani a call if youre interested in their pipe.
