The broken gear probably has nothing to do with the TrueTrac.
I never put one in so wasn't thinking. You here so much good things about them you just wouldn't think this would be a problem. Install means everything.

Welp, the differential, pinion and pinion bearing cups are out of the pumpkin. Just waiting on parts to show up now. Here's another pic of carnage for your viewing pleasure.
Bonanza35, it was just regular acceleration onto the freeway. I do tow quite a bit though. I was unloaded at the time.
One thing that just crossed my mind is that I discovered my pinion had some axial play in it about a year ago. I tightened up the yoke nut and that seemed to cure it. Fast forward to today I noticed the teeth that broke on the ring gear broke towards the heels of the teeth. That indicates to me the pinion depth was too far away from the ring gear. I wonder if the shop that performed the previous install failed to seat the inner pinion bearing cup fully in the case. The cup then seated further into the case leading to axial play in the pinion. My tightening of the yoke nut then seated it all the way, leading to incorrect pinion depth.
One good bit of news is that all bearings are in good shape and not pitted. I'm replacing them anyway.
Just wow. Man that stinks!
I have considered putting in a True Trac but have balked at the fact that if not set correctly “this” could happen.
Hope you have the time to write up the install, from a purely selfish reason.
Either way good luck on getting the pumpkin back together.
Leonard, are you planning on doing the install yourself? Because if you are, I purchased a clamshell bearing puller when I set-up my D60, that I'd be happy to let you use.
My only two experiences with R&P breakage were with sandrails, but same basic concept. In both cases we were just cruising along when the noise started. It's very unlikely that they broke while cruising, it just went unnoticed at the moment that it happened.
Wow, that's very generous of you Dan. Thank you. I just wish I'd read your post before spending the last two hours cutting and chiseling bearing cones.
