Craigslist find

So looking for a 400, this one pops up on craigslist, and I googled the casting number, and a whole bunch of information comes up about this being the "holy grail" of 400s. Here is the casting number in question. Can anyone shed any light on this "holy grail"? D1AE-6015-A2C. http://351cleveland.wikifoundry.com/page/Block+400+FMX+

Early 400s had the SBF bell pattern, and were 9.5 compression. (edit: Not exactly. Seems it was 9.2 in '71 & '72 and the sbf pattern appeared in '73 only)

Otherwise... Make sure that's what you want and make sure it hasn't already gone .040 or .060 over.

He said the crank is marked -10 and pistons +20. Said piston walls look fine, and really only found a sloppy timing chain. He says they took it out of a buddies 77 F-250. What would that mean for transmission? According to that website, it had the bolt holes for the smallblock bellhousing but dual motor mounts? What I'm wondering, is if with the smallblock bellhousing mounting holes, would that make it easier to use with a ZF5 transmission that was used with the smallblock pickups? If I'm thinking this is something it isn't, I could use the schooling on it.

When I looked it up it came out 351c, however Number Dummy might clear it up. It's deffinately 1971.

1971 was the first year for the 400. So yea, it's probably a 400. But coming from a 77 Truck its likely got a big block bell pattern.

ANy other pictures ? As I recall the small bell pattern also had the big bell pattern cast in the back. These were used in only one application, I'm thinking one year only in the Ranchero with an FMX

But dual mount bosses on one side, not both. The rear driver's side boss is on a different plane from the front boss.

I clarified with the seller. He said it has just the big bellhousing mounts only. He said if it was the other, he'd be asking more for it, or put it in his Maverick. I thought it might be one of those things that he didn't know what he has. Still a good deal for 75 bucks.

These are thin wall cylinder blocks. If it's been bored before it might not be usable again.
