Any one have a good idea on how to remove the 1/8 " brass rod from the aluminum inside buck ? Just from humid / briny air I suspect some electrolysis has taken place .Let it sit over night w/ PB blast on it & nothing . Tried holding it in the vise & twisting it but that just torqued the rod .I did not want to break it off inside the aluminum buck We tried heat , it just transferred thru the alum . to the brass rod & both expanded . Tried tapping it w/ a hammer when hot & nothing . Maybe in the freezer over night then a light tap to shock it loose ? Need the rod to move so can locate dead center of alum. buck on mounting jig. Thanks
Briny air. The marine folks will tell you do not use brass and aluminum together in the marine environment. Plus on the galvanic scale aluminum is very aggresive while brass is more passive. Sets up the corrosion scenario. See 2nd page, the first diagram of base and fastener, and text.
So you have diagnosed what went wrong (although more like galvanic corrosion than electrolytic). Now how to unfasten. Thermal coefficient of expansion is higher for aluminum. That would suggest heating aluminum quickly rather than the brass, if possible. May need repeated cycles of heating and cooling.
Hopefully there are some metalurgist or nautical types here that can suggest something?
