'96 F150 Starting Issues

My truck's engine has always been relatively trouble free, but in the last couple of months it pulls slightly like it is missing when driving at 40 mph and above. Now it will crank but will not even try to run. I have just ran the battery down trying to get it to start. I tried jump starting it and the starter wouldn't turn for a couple of tries then on the next try it cranked weakly and suddenly started cranking at normal speed and started. Anyone had this happen to them? The battery has tight clean connections.

It's only 2 years old. I guess that may not mean much these days, though. I was wondering about the fuel delivery system.

Bad/corroded terminals and cables are the most common cause of slow starter performance. Add in bad ground at the engine block. Then look at the starter IMHO.

I put solder on forklift battery terminal clamps on the starter and ground cables, not too long after replacing the starter. I'll have another look at things tomorrow.

It sounds like you just discharged the battery and pushed the limits of the starter by cranking for too long while troubleshooting the no start.

Make sure the battery is properly charged by using a trickle charger. Then don’t crank for more than about 10 seconds at a time and allow about 30 seconds between cranking to keep the starter from overheating - if it doesn’t start/try to start after 10 seconds then it’s not going to anyway and cranking the engine for longer isn’t doing any good.

If you’re concerned it’s fuel delivery and don’t have a pressure gauge, spray starter fluid or carb cleaner into the intake while cranking it. If it starts/fires, that’s your confirmation. If it doesn’t, check to see that it’s getting spark.

I want to have a look at it with the battery up. I think I should be able to hear the pump cut on with the key on. I had to go ahead and take it home from here at work as opposed to risking needing a 20 mile tow.

One thing I remember about yesterday's failure was that when turning the key on then to start, there was no sound present before the starter hit. The first try I made when the voltage dropped enough to lose the starter, there was a sick buzz under the hood, the fuel system trying to charge. This morning I got a new battery for it. The old one was dated 02/12. I also got a new 15a relay, in the event one of the fuel system relays is failing. Wish such stuff was monitored by the OBDII system

Hey, I just and I mean just had this same issue yesterday. 5.8 would crank like a madman but run? Huh uh.
After a while this one would start. Fuel pump was kickin on and had pressure but no spark. Then I had spark, then no spark. You know the pattern. One minute all ok the next minute your looking for the correct cuss word.

I deliver auto parts part time and one of the counter guys that had a garage for 40 years said, ICM. Ignition control module. Replaced it and haven't had another no start.

It's located on the drivers side inner fender just below the hood hinge and mounted on a heat sink. Easy to replace. Cost me 40.

Hope this fixes it.

Thanks. I've had that fail on my Bronco II and mustang. I'll be looking on Ebay for a spare. I already have the removal wrench and heat transfer compound.

I had it to fail to start on the first try. I shut the key off, then to on. The fuel pump came on and charged the system and stopped. I went on to start, and it started. I still suspect the fuel system, but can't eliminate the ignition. I have a new TFI ready to use if need be.
