Air chuck for duals?
When looking at Xcore78's photo, I can see he encountered the same issue as I encountered... the extension wand of the inflator can collide with the perimeter of the hand hole prior to the foot engaging the valve stem at an angle parallel enough to keep the valve core reliably depressed to inflate the inside of the tire, rather than spilling pressure to the surrounding atmosphere outside of the tire.
@xcore78 did you actually add air to your inner dually tire when you took this photo, or where you just simulating reach and fitment? There is a BIG difference between dually inflator fitment, versus the actual act of accomplishing inflation... without frustration. Since you said this was the first time that you tried fitting the S-506 to your new dually wheels, I'm curious if you also tried to actually inflate the tires.
I ended up modifying my Milton S-506 inflators, by adding a wand extension to extend the reach of the rigid portion of the inflator (essentially doubling the length of the piped portion of the inflator). I also replaced the angled head (some call it a foot) with a straight foot instead, so that the manual push from the holding the wand firmly over the valve stem is in the same vector angle as the valve stem the force is applied to. the straight foot also reduced the propensity of the wand to crash against the rim of the hand hole, or collide with the stem of the outside dually wheel. (in the case of my stock steel 5 hand hole wheels for the F-550)
Here are a couple of my inflators. With multiple duallys and multiple locations comes the need for multiple inflators. I always seem misplace them, and then find them again.
The valve stem angles do differ between different Ford duallies. The E350/450 cutaways differ slightly from the F-350 pickups which differ slightly from the F-450/550 chassis cabs. Also, the hand hole size, quantity per wheel, and distribution around the wheel differ between these models. My experiences with chassis cabs and cutaways may not equate or translate to F-350 pick up wheels, given the differences stated.
Thank you for the great post on chuck modification!
No, I never added air into my DRW yet - I even did not press chuck enough to hear the air escaping from the inner tire. I will try to use unmodified chuck on my wheels on the weekend and will let you know if it worked.
