I towed the MS Atlanta to the New Mexico mountains and back to DFW area with my F450 for a total of about 1500 miles including lots of day trips without the trailer. Upon returning to the DFW area, I started getting the "refill DEF tank message". I think it started with a number of about 500 miles to empty.
Anyways, I noticed on the gauge that it was about 1/4 full at that point. Having come from a Ram 3500, I was used to purchasing a 2.5 gallon SuperTech DEF container at Walmart and pouring that in. That amount usually filled me up. Today when I did that, I noticed that my gauge only went from about 1/4 full to about 5/8 full. I am guessing that it is a bigger tank than the Ram so I probably need to pick up another 2.5 gallons of DEF tomorrow.
I find it perplexing that DEF comes in 2.5 gallon jugs and the tank is 7.5 gallons (which works out to three jugs of DEF from empty) but the gauge is marked in 1/4 tank increments.
When I look at the gauge I ignore the markings and mentally divide it into thirds which is a much more convenient way to track how much I have or need.
The 7.5 gallon tank is brilliant. Just wait until the warning comes on and it easily takes 5 gallons (2 x 2.5). No need to meter it out or to use the various filling lines that prevent spillage. Easy peasy. Done.
Yep, I put in another 2.5 gallons of DEF last night, and it is full!! So when I get to 1/4 tank from now on I will know that it is 5 gallons down. That's good to know.
For a data point, I have a '19 F-450, 5100 miles on it with about 3000 of that towing a GD Momentum 397 weighing between 16.5K and 20K depending on what I had in it. I've had to add 7.5 gallons of DEF so far
Most truck stops have a DEF pump, if its convenient for ya. Half my gas stations here have them. Much much easier if you can pin one down, especially since you rarely need DEF.
Also, I've had my truck now for 24k miles (30K total) and I've only filled the DEF three times. Third time being just a few weeks ago, and I'm still at full.

It is directly based in fuel economy. Depends on how much you tow, and how hard - everyone is different, and I clearly use more then most
