Hey folks, I have a '99 E-350 dually ex-ambulance with a 5-speed 5R110W transmission at 173000 mi. When I first started driving it, it would sputter a bit when it was cold so I'd baby it for 5 minutes and be golden. But lately it's getting worse, even at a good operating temperature, it's spitting and sputtering when I depress the throttle around halfway or more. It doesn't ever do it in 5th gear though. I've also noticed what sounds like an exhaust leak in the engine bay that I'm going to investigate tomorrow under the doghouse, and she's getting louder. If I do have a leak there, could it be the cause?
99 with the 5R110w? New one on me. Do you have the 7.3 liter or 6.0 liter? I would think the 7.3 liter which should have the 4R100 trans. Check for leaks but could it be the EBPV on the turbo if 7.3?
My door jamb label has an E transmission code, which is the E4OD, but I've read that was replaced in these vans with the 5R110W after 1996. Maybe it's because it has the ambulance package? What values should I be reading for EBP? I do notice a loss of power sometimes.
If you can see your turbo, make sure the butterfly on the outlet isn't closed. You will need to move it back and forth to see if it moves freely. You may have to disconnect it to do this.
Your up pipes could be leaking and they would cause the smell. You'll get a bird's eye view of them when you open the dog box and look for soot around the area where they meet the turbo. They are about the only thing that is easier on a van than it is on a pickup. I don't think that could cause your symptoms though.
