water pump change

Hey,

How diffeicult is it to change the water pump on my 90 F150 351w 4x4? I have recently found puddles underneath coming from the small hole in the bottom of the pump. I am going to do it myself, I am just looking for an estimated time it will take me. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!

I haven't done this but I hear the hardest parts are getting the fasteners loose from the block and getting the fan and clutch off the pump..

sometimes water pump bolts get rusty, soak them with penetrating oil and loosen them carefully, its not fun to break off bolts.

snapped 3 bolts on my 89..........had to break off my timing cover to torch out the studs....if this happens and you dont have a stud remover, screw some nuts on the ends of the studs and weld, or have someone weld the nuts on....then heat up the bolts...............works pretty good.

Well, I am half way done... I broke two bolts off. Luckily they both were left sticking out so I could use a pipe wrench to unscrew them after getting the pump off.

Now my question, What thermostat goes in here? I pulled out a 180*, but the parts store gave me a 160* to replace it.

thanks for the tips so far!

i personally only use OEM stats on my vehicles.i dont have to guess at temps. they are an exact fit ,and they are much better quality than most aftermarket stats.they only cost maybe $5 more. steve

195* is waaaaay to hot for a nonintercooled supercharged vehicle. I'd go with the 160* for your S/C...I run a 180* in my N/A motor.

I had great luck replacing my water pump with a Flow Kooler (30% greater flow) pump...I hosed all the bolts down with PB and let them sit for a while.

Hardest part for me was getting the two acc bolts from the air compressor and power steering pump.
