I have a 2003 F250 HD Series It is prewired for the tow package. I just purchased a draw tite brake controller for it. Plus the factory plugs for itEverything works except the trailer brakes. I have checked the fuses etc. I thought it was the controller at first and purchased another with the same problems. Now I think the problem is that my other half wanted to add another hookup in the bed. Would this maybe causing an open circut?
I don't know if he did or not. I bought another controller and it's doing the same thing. Also the other half never hooked up the other hookup. The trouble shooting on the controller said to check the wire for the brakes and we did and everything looked good. Any help is appreciated Thanks!!!
First does the trailer work on another truck? Now has the Breakaway switch been tripped? Now test light check the brake circut. Apply 12v to the positive side and connect the test light before the return ground. See if you get a light. No light = no circut, start testing from the powered side.
Don't the Superduty's come with the brake relay missing from the prewired brake harness? It seems I've read several posts where new Superduty owner's had to purchase and install the relay from the dealer. Try a search in this forum with the search word 'relay' and see what you come up with. Good luck!
The black power wire has a reading of 12.8v Brake Pedal pushed on the cold side high reads 12.6v going into it. These are for the controller. The back end reads 12.8v with lights. Nothing on electric brake wire (blue). The controller doesn't give any readings. These controllers were bought new but were made up to 91. Could this be a possiblity? Also we have no distribution box on the fender well on either side. Just relays.
The 2003 SD crew doesn't have a distribution box under the hood. Found this out while trying to install a brake controller. Any suggestions on getting power to the brakes? Got all the other lights working just can't get power to the brakes. Has anyone else had this problem.
One additional thought: check the wiring at the wheels on the trailer. On my '90 fiver I noticed a change in the braking. Amperage seemed to be ok, I was less experienced back then so this statement may be suspect. I crawled under the trailer and found 3 of the 4 wires leading to the brakes had become disconnected. I had had the springs moved from below the axle to above the axle to accommodate a 4x4 tow vehicle. The shop had not seen fit to lengthen the wires and they had pulled loose with suspension movement.
