Pulling flathead eight

Hi folks, first time pulling my 8BA out of my F68 and looking for any advice on proceedure and where we should hook up crane to engine. Unhooking everything is obvious enough and I believe we leave the 4 speed transmission in place supported?
the lifting points advice would be most valuable. Could take pictures for the forum but my guess I am the rookie and many have done this already

You are asking this question in the wrong forum, this is the 1957/60 F100 and larger truck forum.

No 1957/60 had a flathead. Ask questions in the 1948/56 forum where there's all sorts of flatheads.

I prefer to use the intake manifold bolts (4 of them) with a lifting jig I made. Other people use the exhaust bolt holes. Whatever ones you use, don't tighten the chain down directly on a machined surface. But you do want to tighten the bolt so it won't get bent and snap off.

Do you have the front clip off the truck? or are you lifting it over the fenders?

I bought a nice 4 bolt lift fixture for the intake manifold from stumpys fab works, works great, really a safe way to lift.

Be careful not only to not injure yourself but the motor through a dropping episode. I have seen the v8’s lifting by the carb bolts but that looks pretty sketchy and I wouldn’t try it given how rare the blocks are as well as the oil pans.

One of the best lifting devices you'll find is this unit from Myk's Tools. It's spendy, but it works amazing. He has an adapter plate for his lifter to replace the intake manifold on the flathead. It's easy enough to replicate if you have a piece of plate laying around and can place and drill a bunch of holes accurately. Click on the products tab for accessories. Like JB said, using the three 5/16" studs that a flathead has for the carb makes me really, really nervous. Theoretically, the stresses aren't that high, but if you lower the engine too fast and jerk it to a stop...I wouldn't trust it with ~500 lbs on the hook.

If you pull the intake manifold, it's easy enough to fab a lifting plate that uses 4 of the manifold bolts. The one I made below has yanked my engine 3 times (), and put it back, over the fenders, with no worries. I added the lifting bolt in the cross-pieces in the center, a 1/2" Gr 5 bolt, after the pic was taken.

Thanks to all for the advice. Went with the manifold bolts and chained on back passenger and front drivers side. Had trouble with crane until we realized we were trying to lift whole truck. So the lesson is lift a bit and pull Forward until you fully clear the spindle. Took it over the fender safely but my son is a heavy duty mechanic and I could not have done this without his knowledge as it turned out the bottle jack had some air pockets.
