The shift lever on my 00 E-350 is sloppy.I have to push it into park so it doesnt "jump" in and out when parked. Also,I have to move the shift lever around to hit the "sweet spot" to start the van. Ideas??
Underneath the dash look for the shifter arm end, there's 2 Torx screws that hold it. They are known to come loose, even fall out. Retighten them, and might be a good idea to use some blue Locktite.
Building on Jim's advice if the shifter tube bushings are worn along with the Torx screws being loose that too would contribute to what you're describing. There should be another thread here I've contributed to showing how to do this sort of maintenance---I'll see if I can find and link it here.
I don't use LocTite "blue" or 242 on such small fasteners---at most I'd use the "green" or 290 instead---along with proper torque. Loctite 242 might be a bit too strong for those fasteners in this application IMHO. If future service on the steering column or its parts would be necessary you may need to remove those, the 242 making that a bit more of a chore than it should be.
FWIW each time I've replaced these bushings I didn't use any Loctite, just the proper torque. In 8 years or more they've stayed in place, no further action needed so far.
