6.4 needs new engine, need recomendations

hello all! short story I blew my engine on my baby (no compression on 1 and 2 piston) going to have her rebuilt like new again, have some questions:

1. any one use the stage 1 long block from http://dynamicdiesel60.com/6-4-power...-1-long-block/ good bad experiences?

2. any know any good shops in southern California that remanufacture the 6.4 that you recommend? (I will pull it and stab it back in)

3. any other reman shops that you recommend or have had good experience with that do the whole shipping thing?

thank you all in advance, just want to get my truck back up and running!

Oh boy all I know is the best guy to work on them wont touch them any more. He says too many issues, too expensive and he just cant do it anymore..
Dont know what to tell you. Ford created a monster with that engine...Im sure there is a shop out there that can rebuild them properly and do the upgrades.
Good luck. Let us know what you find. You may want to post in the 6.4l forum..

Navistar designed and built the motor, Ford was the customer.

From what I've read, the 6.4's are time bombs - many of which puke their guts even under 100k with perfect maintenance. The 6.4's 'can' be fairly reliable if you bullet-proof them and strip all of the emissions junk off of them - which is illegal in California, My advice is to move out of California and stab a straight-piped 5.9 12v Cummins in it.

He's had it for at least 9 years. That's quite a time bomb. Apparently he was doing his maintenance diligently. I can't see why he couldn't get another 9 years out of the next engine.

i have had this truck since new 2008, DPF/EGR/Tuned since almost new, truck has been great, and is quicker then any other diesel I have drove. only reason I smoked 2 pistons (no compression on 1-2 rings gone) is because I forgot to put the tow tune on and towed 16k # trailer 2k miles on a hot street tune. looking at the costs of new trucks I would rather spend 12k to make this engine and all other wear items new again and drive it for another 11 years then drop $70k on a new one....

My 08 was a good motor too. Never had a problem with the emissions. I only ran my for 5 years and 86K miles but it had a lot of life left in it.

I'd seach for a good diesel shop.

12k + part out of the rest of the 6.4 buys a nice used 6.2 gasser... throw a little more on top and you could get a 6.7.

The guy in the video is a well know diesel builder and he is done with the 6.4. When I was looking for a truck I was considering a 6.4, I have a friend that has a local shop that does a lot of diesel work and asked him about a 6.4 he said the same thing as the guy in the video STAY AWAY. You may find some 6.4s that will make 100,000Mi. with little or no issues the problem is you will find just as many that have had nothing but issues. Also if their are little or no good cores left for rebuilding purposes that's going to be a whole different problem. If it were mine I wouldn't take a $12,000 risk on a 6.4. Count your blessings part your truck and put the $12,000 towards a new truck. What ever you do I wish you good luck, and please keep us posted on your out come.

I've got a 6.7, but have several friends with the 6.4 who are having good luck with them. All are deleted with mild tow tune and not crazy stuff. I opted for the 6.7 when I bought because I found the needle in the haystack. But I'd not be afraid of the 6.4 if I knew the history and it checked out well. I understand your position on it and probably agree with you on the new engine route. Once you get a good truck, it's really hard to trade away. Good luck with your project!

IMO, 9 years without grenading a motor isn't a sign of a good motor. ALL motors should go at least 25 years and 300k miles with proper maintenance, if not longer - barring the occasional random catastrophic issue. As mentioned, the 6.4 'can' be reliable if they've got all of the emissions stuff bypassed, but every trustworthy diesel mechanic I know says to stay away from them. Even Ford themselves stopped making replacement parts for the 6.4 already.
