As a kid we used to camp all the time out of a "country squire" wagon. Hated that thing (the looks not functionality) when I started dating but would love to have one now.
Does anyone make a big wagon anymore? I think not.
chperry: Ford owns volvo. Get her to go with the volvo. Plus those wipers on the headlights are pretty cool *Just have fun when your electrical starts to go on any of this stuff
It's funny that everyone says import is reliable and domestic isn't...when domestic owns alot of the foreign market anyway.
I love Wagons, I have a 64 Impala 9 passinger wagon that I am currently working on. I plan to put in a newer Vortec from my suv. Before I get to old I wanna load it up with my pals and drive coast to coast. Lotza room for people and cargo. Hopefully the fuel injected 350 will get us there without breaking much of a sweat. Pluss the old wagons are getting rare cuz no one wanted to keep em. Wagons are just different, and to me that's cool.
chado: I knew Ford owned Volvo. What I think is amazing is the US autmakers own so many foreign auto companies (or parts of them) and yet the imports ARE more reliable. Doesn't make sense.
Although I've had my fair share of problems with imports, my acura is the reason I bought a Ford. And people are always saying how great hondas are...well I broke tons of stuff, and the stuff that I didn't break by being abusive (shifting to hard etc fell apart anyway, dash cracked (even though I used protective stuff on it weekly) the body was rotting and it was less then 10 years old (ask anyone who drives hondas...the emblem of honda is rust) and they are not as fuel efficient as people say when you rev the snot out of them all the time
Anyway I've had less problems with my 79 F-150 in the last year then I did with my acura in the just over a year I owned it.
As for anything brand new. I can't comment as the newest thing I've had was the acura and it was a 93 (and I bought it in 2001 with 80,000KMs on it and a fresh paint job)
A buddy of mine had a '68 impala wagon with a built 396 and a TH400. It had a harwood hood scoop and needed paint, but it had cutouts and was just cool as hell. We used to cruise it around alot, and let me tell you, girls LOVE it.
At the ripe old age of 26, I LOVE station wagons. My dream station wagon would be a Marauder station wagon with the staggered 18 inch chrome 5-spokes and a supercharged 4.6L V-8 from the Cobra. That thing would haul some serious ***!
I think the best wagons from the past were the sleepers. They were the full sized wagons with the big blocks underneath the hood ready to suprise unsuspecting idiots at the stoplights.
Thanks for the thread. I needed to get that off my chest. You know, denial can be a terrible thing.
My first car, was my Grandma's old 1978 Toyota Cresida wagon. That thing was a tank. V6, that was more like a 4 banger. A-track player, that when I first saw it was a cassette player lol.. The AC worked when it wanted to. But its not listed on the above website.
My dad had a 1978 LTD wagon with 460 that got something like 20 miles to the gallon....... That is what he told me a while back.. I'll see him this coming weekend and can find out...
This is what I like about old cars like this 77 Ford Squire wagon. the resale value is abysmal Nobody wants them. Good!! If I needed yet another wagon, I would get it. Except I don't. But low miles!!
That back corners kinda buckled. Would be a little pricey to fix? But still that looks rust free.
I tried telling my girlfriend to get a 70's wagon, she tells me its uncool.
She tells me she doesn't like sitting up high like in a truck (I think she was fed paint chips as a child) and that she likes big cars...I was like well old wagons are cheap, cheap on insurance (the biggest issue) and they are easy to fix...and they are useful. Roofracks for bikes, lots of room in the back part for whatever your toting around (tons of junk from shopping or computer over to myplace for the weekend)
Can I make her see reason? NOOO She wants like a mid 90's crown vic.
BAH!
Females make very little sense when you try to analyze them logically...they tell you they want to be frugal with the $ then they make statements like that?!?
I'm a wagon lover too! Some of the beauties I've owned:
74 Vega, 78 Mercury Zephyr 2.3, 76 Plymouth Gran Fury Suburban (first and only Chrysler product), 78 Lemans, 87 Taurus and just bought a new 2004 Subaru Impreza TS.
Not sure why, I guess it's just the practiciality - I usually have to haul something that won't fit in the trunk of a regular car.
