Get the factory fill spout. I won't let you over fill. So no worries when it freezes. Big plus, no spillage.

With all the warnings, I would not fill the def until you are at 200 miles till empty. Letting it run down to about that point and then doing a complete refill will keep those sensor from getting confused.

Even though you have a guage it really is not a guage and still depends upon the rods and sensors in the tank.. Those things get confused with incomplete refills.

I always used the factory fill spout, but it wouldn't seal on the last jug of Walmart brand DEF. So much for no spill. I had to pour the DEF into a Ford jug and then was able to use it.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. The FORD OEM fill spout is on order and I’ll have it this week.

Don't have an OEM spout and never spilled filling from a jug. I have had spills relying on the auto shut-off of bulk DEF dispensers.
I figure I've gone through about 450 gallons of DEF in 22 months...

I used to do that but once I realized that the factory spout sealed on the aftermarket brand DEF bottles, I got rid of the Ford DEF bottle. I currently have the spout on a Wally World DEF bottle in the closet with the spout tip sealed with masking tape.

In my eyes THAT is a bunch of DEF. I don't believe I've yet consumed that much diesel in my 13+ month old dually (3820 miles?).

I feel like that had to have been a typo. I definitely need more info! I know heavy loads will increase consumption, but that is an insane amount! Are you a Hot Shot driver? I figured heavy use would drain a 5 gallon DEF tank every oil change or so. Soo...how many oil changes were done during those 5 gallon DEF tank refills?!

Well, DEF is consumed at the rate of 1000 miles per gallon of DEF. 450 gallons would be 450,000 miles in 22 months. It's not likely he has accumulated that many miles in 22 months.

When towing DEF consumption will increase. How much? I don't know, but let's say it's twice the average rate, so 500 miles per gallon of DEF. 500 x 450 gallons = 225,000 miles. 225,000 / 22 months = 10,227 miles/ month. There is roughly 20 work days in a month so 10,227 / 20 is 511 miles per day traveled. How many hours can a hot shot driver drive in one day legally? 10-11 hours? I know when I travel across country it takes 10 hours to travel 500 miles at the speed limit, which includes fuel stops, bathroom breaks, and meal stops.

It looks plausible after looking at the math.

I use 5 gallons on average every 5K miles, but sometimes I will only get 3K miles. Towing heavy eats the def.
