Folks, I just bought a 2001 flareside from Florida(I live in NH) because everything rusts out up here rapidly. Great shape-paint-interior but it high miles and the 4.6 is tired. I would like to do a engine swap so I can go up to 300 hp(crank). I've been reading a lot on these pages and also the other f150 sites. Looking for info on what swap would have the least hassles/issues to attain this goal. They all seem to have there own unique issues whether going to 5.4 3v or 4.6 4v or 5.4 4v and lastly 5.0 coyote. My thoughts are to find a totaled truck and use everything I can. My neighbor has a crashed Aviator with 4v 4.6 I've been eyeing . Local junkie has a couple 5.4 3v trucks on site.I have a neighbor and another friend who are Ford mechanics and will rebuild anything for the cost of parts so that helps me. So what is sensible to do, what would you try to do or avoid because of difficulty/issues. Thanks for any info and advice, I appreciated it.
A 4.6 can get to 300HP at the crank without too much drama. Factory stock it was 231HP already. The question is: What's "tired" about it?
Since your neighbor and friend can rebuild anything, rebuild the 4.6 in it (if needed) then amp it up a little. A lot simpler than swapping something bigger in . . . plus transmission because it's probably as tired as the engine.
