I have a 2002 F150 with the 4.6 engine. It has roughly 150K on it. She's a gutless wonder. The motor runs fine but I want more power. Should I build the 4.6 up or swap for a 5.4? Can I really get the 4.6 to the same power level as the 5.4 with simple bolt ons? Thanks
i have seen some good deals on craigslist for engines. The good thing about that is you get to check it out before you buy. 5.4 with newer heads would / sounds like the way to go.

I'll check it out. The cheapest on ebay in a grand. My local pick n pull is having a half of sale next weekend. Was thinking about dragging the cherry picker down there and pulling one out for half price.
People need to remember ............. gearing is the great equalizer!
My ex-work van, an '05 E250 4.6L w/4.10 gears & 188K miles out performed my new '08 E250 5.4L w/3.73's and got 3 MPG better mileage!
My current '98 F150 SCab 4x4 4.6L w/3.55's gets 16 MPG and that kicks the crap out of the '95 F150 SCab 4x4 5.0L w/3.31's I did have and still has plenty of power for my occasional car trailer towing. Personally, I love the 4.6L !
Well you really need gears. Installing gears in these trucks is easly the next best thing to nitrous or a charger. Im about to install 4.56s in my truck.
If you dont drive on the highway alot get 4.56s. But if you drive on the highway, esp. for long distances get 4.10s.
If you dont have 4wd, you could get 4.30s, which would be a good gear ratio if you drive about 50/50 highway/city.
How do I find out which gears I have? There isnt a tag on the diff like my dodge.
It will have a number on the data decal on the door post. Look where it says AXLE and post the number here. It'll probably be something like 19 or H9 ....or you could post your VIN.
