Random Check Engine Light

Hey everyone,
Alright, an unusal problem has come up with my 94 Ranger 4.0L V6. I get a random check engine light whenever I shift between 3rd and 4th. I've noticed it only happens in the mornings when the engine is cold.

I've run the codes multiple times over the last 3 weeks. The first time I ran them it came up with the Mass Airflow Sensor being over voltage. I check it, and it actually was reading high. I decided to let it go and reset the computer to see if it would come up again. But since then, all tests have passed when I ran the codes and no noticable problems other than this have come up.

Does anybody have any ideas? Any input would be great. Thanks.

Hey oriteon,

I have this problem intermittently; light slowly goes on + off aprox. every 5-10 seconds sometimes longer/shorter durations. We'll have to wait to see if one of these other brainiacs have the answer, maybe 2 fold!

i have a 94' 4.0lt v6 also.
i have just gone through a caniption fit with mine over the last year . mine would surge to around 2500 and then want to cut off but after it warmed up it would run fine except for a cel when pulling hard , accellerating hard usually around 3rd and 4th .have been chasing this gremlin forever it seems.i thought i had really cleaned the maf sensor but as it turns out i looked at it with a jewlers loop 30x and saw some crap had built up on the air cleaner side, shot it off with throttle body cleaner and so far it has seemed to have cured the problem, i had been getting all kinds of codes that were not the source of the problem ,i had really been chasing ghost.seems that a subtle problem somewhere can cause untold heart ache , frustration .

be thorough when checking stuff ...

Hi guys. I thought the CEL would not go out if a problem fixed itself until maybe it went through a number of driving cycles. I had a egr problem and the light stayed on until I reset it with the reader.

I liked it better in the old days. If your truck was runing rough, you gave it a tune up for a few bucks and you were good to go.

Hey Mike W,
You had an EGR problem + set it with your reader? What is the reader, your code puller?
I'm still trying to get this terminology down!

I bought an Innova model 3100. It was on sale at Kragen for $99, reg price was $150. It works on 1996 and up. I reset the cel for the egr problem. It came back the next day. Took it ti Ford and they replaced a sensor. 90% plus of the cel are some smog sensor acting up.

I bought my 94 4.0L 5SP 4x4 new back in 94 and had a similar CEL (intermittent) prob develop at about 5000 miles. The dealer thought it was maybe an O2 sensor that was at one end of it's limits, but it could not be confirmed. They also suggested that I try changing brands of gas. Changing brands of gas did not help.

I fixed the problem by running a bottle of fuel injector through it every time I change oil at 3000 miles. With the exception of a rare and short lived CEL while pulling a heavy load and with my foot in it hard, the problem dissapeared. Hope this helps.

Ahh, I never even thought about that. Think I'll try that out. Now is that Fuel Injector cleaner or that other conditioner stuff?

Oh yeah, that Innova model 3100, you say it's for 96 and newer models. Is there anything like this for the 1994 models? I'd do the research myself, but I have no idea what to look for. I'm still pretty new to this type of stuff like most people.
