Help with P0430 code: driver's side CAT..

Howdy Guys,

Been fighting a P0430 for a few weeks now - Driver's side catalytic converter bank. After reading several post on this and other sites I troubleshooted in the following manner, from the lowest cost up:

1. replace all spark plugs. Clear code. Came back after a couple days.
2. Replace downstream O2 sensor. Clear code. Cam back after a couple days.
3. Replace upstream O2 sensor. Clear code. Came back after a coupe days.

It's been 3 weeks since the last sensor was replaced. Odd thing is that the CEL will come on and off over a period of several days, then come back on days later.

I would like to NOT have to replace that CAT right now due to finances. My question at this point is - Is there any type of TSB out there that widens the spec for this CAT bank sensor pair?

Thoughts? Is the CAT the only thing left that I have to do?

Thanks for any help.

If the cat is partially clogged, there is a possible option......you can pull the cat and with a bucket wash it (internally) with soap/water hoping to clear it out...….you can also try a cat cleaning product (pour into fuel tank type) and see it that might help a little. If you can clean it out, assuming the internals aren't falling apart, it should be ok.

If it's the downstream sensor the folks on a Dodge charger forum have had luck by using an anti fouler which moves the sensor out of the exhaust stream and keeps the sensor from throwing a code.
My hemi charger was throwing the same code and this method has kept it from throwing the code ever since I installed the set up on my car.

All of my old OBDII Fords have seemed to end up with anti-foulers on the downstream O2 sensors for some reason....

As long as the converter internals haven't broken up or melted, moving the downstream sensor out of the exhaust stream has done the trick.

To the OP,

Is the truck running any differently? Have you had any type of an induction service performed such as a walnut blast?

Truck runs like a top. No driveability issues at all.

No modifications at all, with the exception of a boost side Catch Can.

I went down the same road you did. I managed to get 6 months without the check engine light after new plugs, boots both o2 sensors. Once it returned I cleared it a few times but kept coming back.I ended up purchasing a Walker converter from Rock Auto . Price was around 150.00 and install was not to hard. My truck( ecoboost ) had 130,000 on it and now at 136,000 so far so good.

That's good to know. I may end up dong that. Was the Walker CAT a direct bolt-on, meaning did it fit well?

I need to do some more research about whether the CAT can be "cleaned". I'd like to be able to hear from someone that did "clean" the CAT and got good results.

Yes it was a direct fit. Two bolts on the turbo.I have a Milwaukee 1/2 impact gun. Couple of extensions and a universal came right off. The band clamp I ended up cutting the bolt and replacing. You already have dealt with the 2 O2 sensors, so that's about it.

I drove an additional 6,000 miles after the replacement converter with no return of check engine. Truck was traded in (136,000) running good in November. Have a 2019 with 5.0 now.

Curious as to why the new 5.0 vs. another EB?
