In the next couple of months I'm looking to possibly purchase a 2017- 18 - or 19 explorer.....I need some feedback.....I want 4wd and the 3.5 engine.....I'm guessing there all 6 speeds....... XLT or limited?......
I believe that you can only get the 3.5 4x4 in the sport model
Wrong, you can get it in the Platinum also. How do I know, I have one. Mine is a 2018 and I'm selling it also. Bought it for the wife but she don't like it now because she's to low too the ground so she bought a F150 with a 6" lift. My explorer only has 8k miles on it. Only thing that sucks is it suffered some damage from Hurricane Michael. Took it to Ford and they repaired everything back to original OEM status.
3.5L normally aspirated V6 engines are the standard engine choice on all trim levels lower than the Platinum and the Sport. On Sport and Platinum trim levels, the 3.5L Ecoboost V6 is the only engine that can be had.
Other than the timing chain/water pump replacement when due (usually at higher mileage) being the more expensive repair, they are overall very reliable.
We just bought a 2016 XLT 4x4 Explorer with the 2.3 Ecoboost, and are very happy with it. That in-line 4 cylinder is very impressive with the twin turbo ecoboost. I drove several 3.5 motors, non-ecoboost and I much prefer the eco over the standard 3.5.
