6.7 derate

I have a 2012 f550 with the 6.7L the problem I am having is when you take off right after starting you get about a 1/4 mile and it derates and a message comes up and says reduced engine power. Pull over and shut it off and start right back up and runs fine has anyone else ever had this happen? Also this is a fire truck so it goes out the door and put right to the floor. Had it to the ford dealer and they can’t find anything wrong

Sounds like a fuel problem. Running out of fuel, goes to limp mode, turn off gets fuel again and is fine. Does it have all the normal emissions equiment on it or is it gone. Just curious if its running more then stock tunes. I assume its all stock since ford is working on it.

Get a scanner. There will be a code set. That will tell a lot of the story.

EDIT: Missed your comment about going to Ford dealer. Might be time for another dealer.... does this truck idle a lot? Any check engine lights? When was the last time that the fuel filters were changed?

the fuel filters & the air filter were both just changed by the ford dealer & made no difference. everything is stock on the unit & it only has about 8600 miles on it. we try to put it up on high idle when not driving but it does get idle time. we have had the code 0234 for overboosting. also the ford dealer did do the cac piping recall as well. we have it scheduled to go to a different dealer. im just trying to see if anyone else was having this issue so that when the dealer tells me something I know he isn't blowing smoke up my butt

i have a idea
it may be driven in town and it idles a lot. My suggestion is take it out on the highway and let it rip. It may fuel related. Do you have your own tank at the station you fill from. I can't believe that the dealer isn't willing to dig into this truck and fix it. Maybe they dont live in a wood house. Just a thought.
Hope you get this figured out Chief

that's what the bill said. I don't know what gets done. they just said that they did it. the pipes don't look new so it may just be clamps or just an inspection. you may want to look into it.

perhaps someone left a cap to go down the tank and plug the screen.

Do you use a cetaine booster and the white cap from the bottle may have fell in the tank.

Hadnt thought of that Scott, Good call. Do you guys put anything besides diesel in the tank? Anti-fungal, etc? Would be good to have someone drop the tank, and take a peek. Chief, there are often reports here about this. The little cardboards that seal the caps on various additives typically get soft, or the adhesive holding them in gets soft due to the petroleum contents. That little round disk is about the same size as the fuel pickup in the tank, and others have found this to be the cause of the symptoms you mention. I use an additive, and use bottles like that, that I refill. I've pried the carboards out of all of them for this very reason.

No we don’t put the additives in the unit is parked inside in the heated firehouse. We get our fuel from the highway dept so the fuel is not in storage very long

Kind of sounds like a software problem then. You drive it 1/4 mile, truck acts up, you shut it off and restart and truck runs fine correct.? Does this happen once a day or is it every time you use the truck?

It only happens when you first start it up after that it is fine until it is parked overnight
