AC Clutch Noise
AC has been blowing cold and working fine, drove to work fine one day but on th way home when I parked in my driveway I heard a noise from under the hood. Looks like it was coming from the AC clutch, and it was only making noise when the compressor was turning off.
Had a mechanic buddy replace the clutch, with a Murray ac clutch assembly from O'Reilly, because I wanted to keep the working compressor : still making the noise. Replaced magnet pulley and clutch plate / hub.
I have removed the clutch plate, tried to use a different combination of the washer shims I have and make the Gap too big and too small and all in-between. Still making the noise.
I have attached two videos of what it's doing. I do not know what else to try.
Coincidentally, today my wife drove it to the store just a few blocks away and she said she saw smoke from under the hood. When I got there I noticed the clutch wasn't engaging. I thought I just put too many shims in place so I drove it home with the AC off and waited for it to cool down and removed one of the two shims. It's still not engaging.
I've uploaded two videos. First one is manually making the clutch engage by putting power to the relay and hearing and seeing it "click". The second video is the engine turning off and on so you guys could see what it's doing.
I guess it's just completely given up the ghost, right?
Important question: do y'all think it's safe to drive if the AC is off?
