'04 F150 phaser knock
I'm sure this topic has been covered several times over the years, but as I've searched the forums a few times and have only found vague-ish answers to the questions I have, so if there are threads answering I apologize in advance and would be grateful for links. That said, here goes-
I bought an 04 super crew lariat just over a year and a half ago from a used car dealer, I asked if the phaser TSB had been completed to which the said yes (I have since found that wasn't the case). Engine was quiet at the time, and it ran like a scalded dog. After the first couple oil changes, the dreaded phaser knock began to appear. It's getting to the point where the gas station attendants have started questioning me when I ask for gasoline instead of diesel, and within the last 500 miles the truck has tried to fall on its face when rolling up to a stop, which through watching videos posted by FordTechMakULoco on YouTube is consistent with phasers sticking in the advanced position when returning to idle.
Now, I'm an Ag mechanic by trade, so I'm not scared to dig into this. However, I want to do this right so I only have to do it once, and avoid further damage leading to catastrophic failure. I am trying to compile a list of parts required or recommended to fix it right, so aside from the phasers, chains and solenoids, what will I need to get other than the gaskets? I've seen that a high volume oil pump is recommended, is it required to pull the sump to R&R, and should I tried the pickup tube as well?
Any suggestions/experience/cautions are appreciated! Thanks in advance!
If not, send him an email. I’ve emailed him twice and he responded both times.
Keep it short though. One email I sent had 4-5 questions and he didn’t answer them all.
