Hey guys. New to this forum after a few years with my Mustang. Just got an 02 Explorer XLS 4x4. I know its not as capable off-roading as a lot of other trucks, but I'd still like to get it dirty and see what it can do. I'm not looking to do anything serious, just get a little intro to the world of four wheel drive.
Problem is, I live in the Cleveland area, with not too many obviuos places close by to try it out.
So my question is, where'd you get started as enthusiasts? Anyone live near a city, or are you all lucky enough to ave the wide open spaces close by?
well i live in a city/country it is a fair sized city but when you want to find secluded places its not that hard i accually got started with a 74 chevy 1/2 4x4 w/a 355 sb and 38's in the "city-owned" feild accross the street from my house when it rained i had fun but i dont really recommend this unless when you get caught you have an escape route planned highly illeagle but fun
Search Google for 4x4 clubs in your area. Most clubs have places (both public and privately owned) where they regularly play, and are glad to introduce newbies into the world of wheelin'. Don't worry about being stock and new, most clubs will have gentle trails for you to learn on. The advantages of going with a club are many - you always have someone to go out wheelin with, to strap/winch you out of a stuck, you can learn amazing amounts of information from members about vehicles and driving techniques, and many clubs get member discounts from 4x4 vendors across the country. If you can't find a club, look for areas that are accessible and legal. A lot of us in the Wash. D.C. area have to drive an hour or more to get to wheelin locations. If you wheel in areas that may not exactly be legal for you to be.... Be forewarned that you risk a ticket or a jail trip, and sometimes impoundment and seizure of you pride and joy. Not something to take lightly. Remember above all to have fun and to Tread Lightly!
I was lucky. I grew up in rural Minnesota where most farmers couldn't care less if you went and tore up their pastures, (just as long as you asked first!). There were also a lot of minumum maintenance roads around, which basically was a snowmobile trail that people used as a shortcut in the summer. A good Friday night's entertainment in high school was to go out and put on your work clothes, get 4 of your buddies with thier rigs and find the nasties mud hole you could. And the way we did it was whoever made it through last bought breakfast at the all night truckstop. Now all my friends are grown up with real jobs and families and all that comes with that, but we all still get together once a year and relive the old days.
