Hi all, I'm not new but I did have to change my username etc due to not remembering my password. System isnt working properly when you select forgot password. Anyway I recently bought a 1996 F150 4x4 with 5.0 engine and automatic. Truck runs great with the exception of a check engine light that comes on for secondary air (Smog Pump). I know the issue is because the previous owner eliminated the pump and air tubes to the back of the heads but left the EGR system intact. He also eliminated the cats and installed true dual exhaust. My question is can I trick the ECM someway to not look for the smog stuff? I dont want to spend the money to replace all that stuff if i dont have too. Remember that this is a 96 model with the OBD system.
The issue lies in the way the obd system checks the secondary air system. Basically it will periodically allow the air pump to blow air into the exhaust and it looks for the o2 sensors to pick up a lean mixture reading. I did just this on a 96 4.9 truck by just disconnecting the air pump hose and diagnosing the codes thrown from it.
Sct has tuning options to turn off egr and secondary air systems. That was my end result and what im using now
There are multiple sct devices that will communicate with your ecu. At least this has been my experience. I use a sct x3 to tune with but have also datalogged with a sct livewire touchscreen. My favorite is the sct x4 as you can datalog with it alone and it is better priced then the livewire.
The biggest problem is finding a tuning shop that will put any effort out for us. I ended up buying the sct pro racer advantage software from lasota racing and i tune myself. Lasot had a spot on base tune that really helped. This is expensive (fair warning) i think i have about 800 dollars in tuning equipment for this truck.
Also, the things you turn off with sct will show as "incompletes" on a plug in emissions test. So you may be able to get away with 1 or 2 but i think my truck shows 4 incompletes and i have to keep the odometer under 5k miles a year to be mileage exempt here in pa. The upside is you can do any mod once your tuning equipment is set up.
