Had some good weather this weekend and painted my spring leafs and a bunch of suspension components. The dang Japanese beetles were driving me nuts. They look like lady bugs and are swarming all over everything trying to find a spot to spend the winter. I found a bunch of them when I removed my wheels last winter:
I hope to have my tie rod, spindles, front backing plates and drums blasted and painted this week. Then I can get the whole front end back under the frame. I'm going to leave the rear axle and driveshaft for spring. I can bolt it back on temporarily.
Also got my rods back so I just need to order some bearings and I can start reassembling the engine. I may have to wait a couple months for that. When the Cubs make the World Series, I'm going to try and get some tickets. May have to dip in to the truck fund. But we diehard Cubs fans are used to sacrifice!

Yeah, that's what happens when you spend the money set aside for the heating bill on shiny new hubcaps!
Come On! DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT! spend truck money on the Cubs. That will have two affects: 1) it will jinx the Cubs, 2) and most important it will slow down the truck progress. Besides you can watch the game on the tube while you are working on the truck and it won't change the out come.
Since the wheels aren't on I can't officially say your "rolling right along" but I'll say it anyway! I can't wait to see this thing finished! Make sure to take some pics(hey If I can't restore one now, might as well watch somebody else). As always goodluck, -4speed
Cubs win their first post season series since 1908 and Jet Jock doesn't think you need to go to a game if they get in the series? I guess you're supposed to wait for a special occasion Kevin???
It couldnt be any better unless Harry was around to announce it.
Hey Kevin, doesn't it feel great to get something like that completely done and looking great? Did you have the same feeling I did - after disassembly, there seemed to be about twice as many parts as you expected? With everything laid out like you had yours, I was wondering how in the world all the parts would go back together to make just two spring packs!
It sure does feel good. I can't wait to put the tranny crossmember back in and start mounting the shocks, springs and steering components. It took a lot longer to blast the leafs than I expected. I didn't realize how much surface area was packed in there. I ended up giving them a quick shot with a wire cup brush on an angle grinder before blasting them. There was just too much dust getting kicked up.
The leafs are a little worn where the ends were digging in but none of them were cracked. The worn spots may affect the ride a little but should serve my purpose. I may look into those teflon buttons mentioned here. Will the paint affect the ride? I think I'll compromise a little ride quality for springs that won't look like a rusty mess in six months.

They are slick, but you have to drill some good sized holes into spring steel to install them. That's a lot of holes in a full stocker spring set. No fun with the tools I own anyway.
Will the paint affect the ride?
Not to any noticable degree IMO. You could make a case the rust growth you delay could make you better off down the road.

Well, that's not gonna happen so I guess I'll just slap 'em back together and be done with it. I'll worry more about comfortable ride issues like this when I'm building my daily driver years from now.
