As long as the overall circumference is the same, it doesn’t matter. Nope, steel rim for spare is what you get and the tire is dependant on what they have to match for use as a spare.
2017 F350 Platinum, spare is a steel rim with a different tyre than the rest.
Anyone else notice this? I would imagine that the spare should have the same rim and tire?
Stock Michelin’s on the truck (dealer didn’t change them)
This is standard on the trucks delivered with 20” wheels. The spare (an AT tire on an 18” steel wheel) is almost the same size (revs per mile) and is no doubt cheaper for Ford.
In 4 decades of driving I’ve never had a vehicle with alloy wheels with a spare that wasn’t steel. I never went to the expense of buying a matching spare either. With the amount of dirt the spare collects riding under the truck it wouldn’t be pretty when I drug it out to use after a flat anyway.
How important is it to have the same circumference tire? I have 275/65r20's and the spare is 245/75r17 ? I would say quite a difference! Would a 20 fit the space allowed?

65r20 vs 75r17
When both are new, the 65r20 has a slightly larger diameter. However when the 65r20's are nearing replacement, that 75r17 that has never touched the road will actually have MORE diameter. Your spare tire will never be a 100% match for the 4 that are on the vehicle, but it will be close enough to get you to a tire shop, and get the flat fixed.

Some of the trucks with chrome or alloy wheels came with steel spares that were not always the same size. Maybe all of them....?
It depends on the size of the road wheels. For MY2017+, trucks with 17” or 18” wheels are fitted with spares of the same size wheel and tire as the road wheels and tires. For example, our truck is fitted with 18” aluminum road wheels and 275/65R18E A/S tires. The spare is an 18” steel wheel with the same size 275/65R18E A/S tire.
It’s just the trucks with 20” wheels that get an 18” steel wheel and the slightly smaller AT tire for the spare.
Separately, IIRC, trucks with OWL road tires get a BSW spare.
My wife's F150 with 20" wheels comes with a 18" spare that's about the same diameter. Weird thing is her 2018 spare wheel is aluminum and is actually nice enough looking that I wouldn't object to having them on all four corners.
My F250 spare is the same model of tire but does not have the OWL and it is mounted on the usual steel wheel.

Are you sure about that? The 275/65-20 has a diameter of 34.1". The 245/75-17 has a diameter of 31.5". That would mean the tread depth of the new 20" tire would need to be 1.3" to equal the 17" tire when the 20" tire is fully worn.
Regardless, a 31.5 " diameter spare isn't a good match for 34.1" tires.
