I have a 1998 Ford Expediton with the 5.4L Engine. Last week my truck developed a very loud knock, only when the engine is cold. I understand this is a common problem with expeditons. Is ford doing something to correct the problem, like replacing engines? If not, what can I do to make this noise less noticeable. maybe, use a different oil. ANy suggestions you guys can give me will definetly help. By the way, my truck only has 75,000 miles.

Mine has 120,000 and has this noise when it is cold. I think it might be the cam tensioners. I have a friend with an Explorer and his noise was the tensioners. Just a thought,,,,,

 

Well, let me update you all on my situation. Since I didn't get any responses, I decided to go ahead and try to fix it myself.

I switched my truck over from Castrol GTX 10W-30 to Mobil-1 5W30 Full-synthetic. After I did that the knocking has completely dissappeard. So I hope this helps someone with my same problem!!
