I am looking for guidance on how to wire up my hazard light switch. i am doing a full restoration and have therefore a brand new wire harness to work with. i am re-using my original Hazard flasher switch. i have my old wire harness but that is such a hornets nest that there is no way to figure out what wires went where and besides, its all taped up. i did not buy a ford harn close up of hazard switch wires my original hazard switch
ess so i am making a cheaper more generalized wiring harness work. so far, this choice is working out just fine. the hazard switch is really hard to figure out though. i am attaching a photo of my original switch along with the wiring diagram for my truck. The ford wiring diagram shows 3 wires coming off the hazard switch yet my actual hazard switch has 4. The wiring diagram says wire numbers 44 (blue), 284 (red), and 8A (orange w/ yellow stripe) should connect to the switch. My original hazard switch has (a) orange w yellow stripe, (b) white w/ blue stripe, (c) red w/ black stripe, and (d) green w/ white stripe. This means i officially have apples and oranges here folks. can't even make a pie with that nonsense. anyone got any thoughts?? one more thing - when my truck was all together, my hazards operated by having the 2 turn signal indicator lights in the speedo section of the dash light up. there was no separate single light lower on the dash panel like some trucks from this era had.
It's actually simple. This unit stands alone and uses it's own flasher. Needs 12v (always hot) one wire to each side of the signal lights (hook up where the leave the column) . The other wires are use to run a light to let you know their working (cc trucks only have one signal indicator). I busted my brain on this and did make a diagram which I can't seem to find right now.
ok, i sort of understand that this can be simple and your explanation sounds simple but i am still without a direction. what color wires go to what? plus, you are glossing right over what the wiring diagram says to do. The wiring diagram says one wire to the brake switch, one wire to the steering column, and one wire to some other device that i can't understand what it is. is that last one the fuse panel?? if this were truly "simple" i would not be upside down on this. can you give me some more hints or other help so i can understand what to do? i really appreciate your input.
Orange 12v
Green/White left turn, White/Blue right turn. These are from the turn signal switch in the column. They may not light your dash lights because that would have to back feed through your turn signal switch. What you are using is a custom cab signal
indicator switch setup in a standard cab that never had a emergency flasher. That's why CC always had it's own light.
Here is a picture of an original emergency flasher harness. It just plugged in between the signal switch and the headlight harness. Since you aren't using an original harness I have no clue what color wires you have but. On the original flasher harness the WHT/BLU and the GRN/WHT go to the front signal lights the RED/BLK goes to the output side of the brake light switch or any place that will get you power to both brake lights.
Thanks guys for your replies late last night. Cropduster, you solved the mystery for me - I still wasn't understanding what to do with the red/black wire. In my photos, I think my orange wire with the blue tape and the green wire would be used if I wanted a separate, single indicator light like Christmas is showing in his pictures. if I leave those 2 wires unattached, then I am thinking my two directional indicator lights will flash when the flasher switch is activated. does that make sense to each of you?
Christmas, what set up are you showing there with the hazard switch? what is the pull **** right of the hazard switch and what is the light or hole next to that ****?
I don't know which dash panel you have but if it is the plastic CC one there is only one turn signal indicator light the other light is for the high beams. And no I don't believe it will flash because that light is fed off of the turn signal switch not the hazard. I think for it to flash with the hazard you will need to wire it into the hazard circuit. You are kinda on your own there. I wired a 79 column to my 65 but I retained the original emergency flasher light even though the hazard switch is part of the turn signal switch in a 79.
New to the forum and my first post. I have 65 F250 and i am in the process of redoing/updating my dash. I would like to add the emergency flasher switch and warning light. I plan on using NOS part C5TZ-15B590-C. Other then the warning bezel lens and bulb what else will i need? will this plug into the stock harness? Appreciate any assistance!
I know it's for a stang, but the wiring for the trucks is very similar.
The weird thing about the Ford add on hazard wiring is the indicator light. In stock form it wires in parallel with the hazard blinker can, causing the current to split between the blinker and the indicator light. I never liked that setup because it would slow down the blinking or stop it altogether depending on the amp draw of the indicator bulb.
My left/right turn lights blink but I didn't connect the stock indicator to my wiring harness.
EDIT: I made a custom harness from scratch, so your mileage may vary.
Yes, that plugs into the stock harness. The orange wire plugs into the yellow wire at the ignition switch that is always hot. The other two plugs T into the turn signal switch harness. You will probably also want an indicator for the dash as pictured in the post from Crop Duster. EDIT: As you mentioned... forgot about that.

Use an LED bulb for the Emergency flasher; negligible current draw.
That harness should be plug and play. You can probably rig up your own light socket if you can't find an original. The hardest part to come up with may be the bezel for that switch as far as I know it isn't reproduced. Those bezels were not marked like the other bezels on the dash are they were blank.

Fear not Ford truck enthusiasts! An emergency flasher bezel is available (sort of).
A 68 to 72 Bronco emergency bezel can be made to work.
