Hey guys, was doing some 1/8 mile racing at an event last weekend and every time I would hot lap my truck the belt will start squealing bad. It would chirp on shifts years ago when I got the truck but I replaced the belt and the tensioner with a motorcraft and a Gates belt and haven't had any problems since. But now, its back worse than ever and this belt only has 30k on it. I've read where some guys A/C compressors are worn and locking up but I'm not using my A/C at the time of squealing. Anyone got any ideas?
All pulleys spin freely with no resistance except for the air pump. How much resistance is it supposed to have? After spinning all the pulleys that's the only one that I could see could offer enough resistance to cause the squeal.
Water pump is a non grooved pulley and can get shiny with use
Maybe when fan clutch kicks in, the pulley is slipping
Try to roughen it up some with sand paper so belt has more grip
I had a persistent chip in mine that drove me nuts for a while. I found it to be a pulley out of alignment on the power steering pump. Apparently someone had, at some point, replaced the pump and had seated the pulley too deep to align properly with the belt. Some careful checking with a straightedge and an adjustment of about an 1/8 of an inch and it's whisper quiet again. Well, at least as quiet as any 7.3 can be....
Ok, thanks guys. Good ideas to check, I'll investigate some more and report back. The weird part is it only does it when it gets really hot and heat soaked. Which def leads to the fan/clutch/water pump pulley to be very plausible.
