how does show classes work?

i'm new at this so bare with me. i've got a '68 ranger swb orig. 240, 3 on the tree. i would like to get my truck to show quality but i want to keep it as orig. as possible exept for wheels and tires. my question is what can i do to my truck to keep it in a stock class with out haveing it put in a custom class ? or is the wheels going to put me in a custom class? i would also like to know can i fit 18 or 20 inch wheels on all four corners with out any trouble? can i put a chrome dress up kit for my 240?this is my first "show" truck so i don't know how the classes work. all i know is i don't want my truck in the class with CACWBY's truck!!!!also my truck has plastic door covers are they stock and where can i find new ones ? these are alittle rough. i'll post pics as soon as i figure out how. any help is great appreciated. jason

Bring on the "Almost Stock" class

There was talk at Pigeon Forge of creating an "Almost Stock" class, which is where a lot of trucks fit, basic stock with aftermarket wheels and some chrome under the hood. I think that would be a great idea. Actually the 67-72 truck of the year would possibly have qualified. Super clean, but no body mods at all, lots of shiny stuff under hood including the underside of hood. (And he trailered it there). If I was building a custom show truck to always win trophies I probably would have chopped the top 4" and shortened the bed a foot, and thrown in a 514 BB. Oh and the air bags. And of course not be driving all over the damn country. (almost 5000 miles since May).

Hi Black Raptor, thanks for nice words ( I think), I guess if you don't want your ride in the same class as mine ... register it as a VW, most local shows don't care much. (He says smiling).

This was my first summer of actually having a nice enough truck to participate in shows with, always before I've parked in the lot and walked around looking, and I must say it's been most interesting. A very meaniful trophy (Best of Class) came from a "Participant Judged" local show (Madison WI 23rd annual Klassarama), to be judged and found worthy by your peers, is Kool. This should be the way all pay to register shows are judged. So was getting the Trophy at Super Nats (My very 1st ever), also gotta neet looking one at a show in Port Washington WI, that says 1st Place, modified trucks, and I beat a pretty nice 51 Chevy. Another big thrill was - I got to make and pick and award a trophy for "Koolest Ride" at our Badgerland F100 clubs show "Dash to the Dells" last month. I made a way nice trophy (he says modestly) and picked a radically chopped 52 Panel, primered with flames, 460, shaved, and lots of other mods. The guy drove all way over from Mason City Iowa. Oh and Ryan a 16yr old from around here with a primo original cond. 67 Ranger got the Purest Ford Trophy (even though he has my old Chrome Wheels and Dunlop GT's). But really it's was all about the fun to be had, even in the rain.

Yes to modified. No to all CAPS.

What you describe could go either way in shows I've been to. If not lowered or anything then some would consider it stock, but it's not really. Yeah I'm considered modified. Never really thought I was destroying my truck by filling the seams and shaving the driprails, and getting rid of the trim and emblems, etc. but to each his own. My wheels are 17", 8"wide in front and 9.5" in rear. I had 15x10 on rear & 15x8 on front for many years. You have to do the back spacing measurements really good with larger rims to avoid rubbing fender wells, especially if lowering. And not as many tire sizes in 18"and up sizes, almost all are 40series and I tried 285/40 on rear and 245/45 on front and did not like, especially rear, did not fill out wheelwell enough. So running 275/60 and 245/50. You have to be careful of how much wheel and tire you can put in without rubbing both on sides and up inthe top of fender wells also. Oh by the way The moderator is lettin you slide with the all caps thing - it's supposed to be the equal of SHOUTING in the forums. No biggie. Later -
