I have a 96 Explorer XLT, 4.0L, OHV, 2WD. The odometer and tripometer stopped working. The speedometer works fine. This is an intermittent problem. It has happened in the past a few times. The trip and odometer stop working for no apparent reason and a few days later they both start back up. I have taken the instrument gauges apart and replaced the worm gear but that did not fix the problem. Since the speedometer always works ok it seems like the speed sensor in the transmission should be ok.
Does the stepper motor in the instrument cluster only drive the odometer/tripometer and not the speedometer?
Is the stepper motor a replaceable item? I can't find the part via internet search.
Any other thoughts on what might be causing this problem?
Intermittent problems are tough to find and fix. I don't have documentation for a '96 Explorer, but I do for a '97 Ranger, which I assume is similar. When I looked in the shop manual for the '97 Ranger, there were only three things that the problem could be: wiring (including the printed circuit), the speedometer/odometer or the speed sensor. The troubleshooting symptoms only list an inoperative speedometer/odometer, not one or the other. It appears as though the assembly has to be replaced. The schematic doesn't show how the speed sensor input is used to drive the odometer.
You might want to take a look for bad solder joints and problems with the printed circuit like broken traces. Also, look for any pins/sockets that are bent or pushed out of the related connector(s). The junkyard where I go sells speedometers for about $15 and you can get the speed sensor for $10. I would be tempted to throw some used parts at it if the visual inspection is OK. I don't have any better suggestions. The service information is somewhat lacking.
