Im getting prepared to get my 1972 F250 CS back from the paint shop. I want to protect the bed. The bed has never been used having spent all of its life with a camper mounted. I will use the truck for light cargo only no hauling of rocks, or similar stuff...It will be a Home Depot hauler sometimes but nothing too terrible...I want to keep the truck bed as scratch free as possible.
I saw an advertisement for a truck being sold that has what appears to be a rubber form fitting mat in its bed, I like the look of the mat in the photo from the truck's advertisement that I have included here. Does anyone out there know the manufacturer for this particular mat? Im looking for a mat that fits around the wheel wells etc as tightly as possible, I also want one that will be thick and durable....Any help would be appreciated, a Google search hasnt produced results...Any suggestions on making my own? Does anyone recognize this mat? Who is the manufacturer? Suggestions for making my own?
That looks customized. The diamond tread on the corners is unique as I have a similar mat in my '95 truck(that has gone through numerous trucks I've owned). It only covers the 4x8 section, but not the corners. I wish it did but haven't seen that style in many years. I used to have one that did, but it must have gone away with a truck at some time.
mytoolman i just checked with a site that might help you out. it,s called realtruck.com they have universal bed mats that cover the space in between the wheel wells. some are not that much. you could get two to make one that would cover all of your bed. some even have free shipping.
I buy horse trailer mat at the local farm supply, and cut it to fit, with my jigsaw. The downside, is it will prevent water from evaporating, and could cause rust under the mat.
A better option might be indoor/outdoor carpet, cut to size.
Thank you Jig n Fixtures, indoor/ outdoor carpet may be the ticket...I ll go see what styles are available at Home Depot etc...It needs to be functional AND have a good appearance.
Found this. I must have bought one for my new Superduty's back in the day. I don't see why it would not fit pretty well in an older bed? At least pretty close. https://www.autoanything.com/truck-b...-truck-bed-mat
The horse trailer/stall mat is available 3/8, 5/8, and 3/4-inch thick, and comes in various sizes the local farm and ranch has to order it but you can get it.
IIRC, the higher end mats, have bottom ribs, to fit between the ribs in the truck bed. And none of the higher end mats will work with our bumpsides because the ribbing in the bed changed after the dent sides.
So, the only option might be a thicker mat to bridge the ribs in the bed, and cutting it to size. Westin makes a universal which is 6X8-ft, so it has the width to be cut down. I use a Festool jigsaw blade, that is made for foam rubber, which has an edge like a serrated knife. I have to spray the blade every once in a while with some lubricant to get it to go through the rubber smoothly.
Had the one in my '79 since about '84 or so and love it. But don't use one if you have a camper shell unless you're willing to leave the gate open as often as possible for a year! Those things can really stink!
Maybe the rubber these days is not as bad? I seem to remember some brands that used a different rubber that did not have as much of that rubber smell.
Surprised that they're still relatively scarce even for older trucks though. Seems with all the popularity you'd see more companies offering them. Glad you found one Jigs. I wonder what the difference is between a 200 dollar and a 300 dollar rubber mat is though?
And the prices! I guess they represent both the cost of tooling and trying to recoup that over just a few sales, and the relative scarcity of other competition. My $70 mat seemed expensive at the time, and in all these years I suppose it's not out of line for a price to have gone up three to four times. But still, I don't think I'll be buying a $200 replacement rubber mat anytime soon. Glad mine's still in good shape.
