finally got the 82 f150 i've been in the process of buying for a month.......
gotta get familiar with stuff now, i'm one of those "dirty GM guys" lol
anyhow, the stock 300 is nice and tight, get's great mileage, and can pull 50 mph at about 1000 rpm. but how about some cheap upgrades?
i've got the later EFI split exhaust manifolds on my list, but i'm looking at all the vaccuum lines, and wondering if there's a cheap intake in the junkyard somewhere that will give this thing some more poop. what size carb do these things prefer?
the current carb is a stock 2bbl, but i have a 500cfm QJET here in mint shape. were there any factory 4bbls? or would that require an aftermarket intake? 500 cfm too big? only looking for maybe 200-220 hp
how about rocker arms? any stockers out there with more lift than mine?
last question- i have a 2wd SROD, which i really like, except that the shifter has gone to ****, and so have the synchros. makes finding the gears tough, and engaging them tougher. will the mazda or ZF trannies use my current bellhousing and mechanical clutch, or will i be forced to hook up the hydraulics? or would it be cheaper/easier to just rebuild the 4spd?
There were no 4bbl manifolds stock that I can recall, so your aftermarket bound. People claim better mpg and power with the 500 cfm if tuned properly. As far as tranny if the only problem is finding gears and nothing mechanical then give it time you'll find them, lot cheaper than replacement. Some people use the BB chevy roller rockers, that is all I can tell you about that one. later
I am not sure how wild you are willing to go, but I hear some guys take the lower half of an EFI intake and make three carb set ups and stuff like that. You might check out the Fordsix.com website. It is geared more toward mustangs than trucks, but those guys have some sweet looking motors and most know their stuff really well. They could probably give you some good advice as far as modifiying your engine. Better than I can, that is for sure.
