ranger dies

Ok. I have a 94, 4.0 4x4 ranger w/auto tranny. it always started fine until a few months ago. Then today, its was sitting for about 3 hours. I started it drove it about 15 miles going at 70 mph. parked it. went inside for about half an hour. came out, started it, it reved erratically then died. started it again and gave it gas until it seemed like it wouldnt die. then i backed out of the driveway and drove it about a block. it ran pretty rough until i got onto a main road and drove it about 30mph, then it smoothed out.
does anyone have any ideas why it does this, it bothers me a little, and its even more embarasing when it dies in front of a bunch of my frends,

i think it might have somthing to do with the fuel injectors, just a thought though

It did that because you're young and its trying to learn you..... No really, first thing you need to do is see if you can pull any codes out of it. What kind of mileage is on it . Sounds like it may be a fuel pump problem. Time to make friends with someone that has a press guage. Have you done anything to it lately?

acutally, its funny, cause as i'm DRIVING around town, they're riding there bikes, so i get my payback. there are 109 k on it. nothing major has been done to the engine, with the exception of a k&n air filter. when i say that its driving rough, it feels like there is a cylinder not fireing. I know this because our DODGE minivan had the #4 fuel injector clogged at around 76k. but besides changing the oil regularly nothing major has been done.

You have to start with the basics. Have the plugs or wires been changed? This sounds like it's going to lead to a fuel issue but, you have to start at the beginning. How long has it been since it had a fuel filter? Have you checked for any vacuum leaks? I don't think this is the right direction but you have to check. PCV? After that I would go on to check fuel pressure. See what I'm getting at? By instinct I think that you have a weak pump but, you can;t just jump to the end. As for injectors, they do go bad but, not as often as you are led to believe. start with that and see what happens.

we bought the truck in 2001 i think, used with a little under 100 k on it. the plug wires look alot newer than anything else in the engine. but i dont know how old they are, i was planning on putting some new ones on soon. we put new spark plugs in it the summer of 2002. as for the fuel filter, i've never changed it, and i'm not sure if its ever been changed. I think that might be a good thing to replace for good measure. I also did replace the PCV valve this summer. and i've never checked for vacuum leaks, not quite sure how? I think our school auto lab should have a fuel pressure guage. so i'll check that one out as soon as i can.

O.K. I would change the fuel filter. I don't think that vacuum leaks is your problem but to start checking you could just look over all your lines and make sure that they are in good shape. Pay special attention to the one leading to the press regulator on the fuel rail. Have you tried to pull codes yet? If you're not sure how to do that, some parts stores like autozone will do it for you for free.

Yeah, i know theres a way you can jump a couple of wires together and some light will flash a code, but i think i'll just use our schools code readers. Thanks for all of your help so far, also i was wondering how much a fuel filter is, and how difficult it is to put in?

Putting in a fuel filter is almost always a cinch and costs only like $5 or so.

It's a cinch if you have the "special" tool. A fuel line disconnect tool. You can ask them when you buy the filter at the parts store and they will know what you are talking about. It should run about $10 for a whole set of them. They come in a set of 6 sizes (or so) you will only need one. I suggest you save the rest and sell them to your friends on bikes when they get cars of their own. That way you can make your ten bucks back. Provided of course that they need the sizes that you have.

I replaced the fuel filter, started it up, it seemed to run fine, then the next day, it did the same thing, i didnt get a chance to check the pressure yet. or pull codes for that matter, but i'll try and get on top of that in the near future here.

O.K. start with codes. It sounds like you may have a bad regulator or a weak pump.

You have the same year/ engine size I have and you can pull codes by using a jumper wire and looking at the blinking engine light. Does the engine light come on at any point while driving?

Nope, i've never seen the check engine light with the exception of when i start it up, it lights up and goes off. I'll try the jumper wire thing, it should be in my haynes manual.

ok, 3 flashes, then a 2 second pause, then 3 flashes followed by about a 4 second pause. then 1 flash and a 2 second pause, then 3 flashes followed by a 2 second pause followed by 3 more flashes and then thats all the check engine light does, i only did the key on engine off test. do i need to do the engine on one too, and am interpruting these flashes right?, the way i see it, the first numbers 33, and the second number is 133. I'm thinkin i should do the engine on test also, but that will have to come another day.
