Rear diff oil

2004 Expedition EB 5.4. Not sure of rear end fluid. Manual says 75/90 synthetic. Thought was upgraded to 75/140 synthetic? Volume? Thanks in advance.

Yes, 75w-140 synthetic is the TSB updated rear diff fluid required. Capicity is a little over 2 quarts ( 4.5 pts ) . If you have a ( axle code H6 ) limited slip differential use a gear lube like Mobil One 75w-140 that already has the friction modifier in it. Otherwise make sure to add 4oz. of friction modifier to those other brands that don't have it if you have an LSD rear axle.

Also be sure to add it before adding the oil, otherwise you'll end up draining 4 oz. of oil back out to make room.

Or you could cheat… The previous owner did not add the modifier and I corrected the chatter by adding it myself. You just have to jack it up a few inches from the left-rear to move the fluid level away from the fill hole.

Overfilling allows too much fluid to stay in the axle tubes and causes the seals to leak at the wheels.

But the OP is talking about a 2004 with IRS, which means no axle seals at the wheels.

Same principle except the fluid will leak at the seals on the differential instead of at the wheels. The seals are designed to hold back fluid splash, they are not designed for constant emersion in fluid, such as when the differential is overfilled.
