motor swap

Good afternoon gents,

I recently bought a 1985 ford f 150 with the 300 Inline 6. I am going to drive it while I restore it but I would like to do a motor swap for more HP. It currently has the stock manual transmission and inline 6. I am looking for more HP. What are my options for motor swaps without having to replace the current transmissions. Also what are some good recommendations for if the tranny does have to be replaced. What combinations do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to FTE.

What trans do you have? There were several available in '85. 3 on the tree, 4 speed granny, 4 speed OD.

What are you using the truck for? Heavy load and towing? Or are you looking for more of a hot rod?

It has the 4 speed Granny. I am wanting hot rod not so much towing. Just to ride around town and have fun.

302 and AOD from an '88 to '93 Mustang. Probably getting hard to find in straight runnable condition due to age. (Last AOD is '93)

351W and AOD from a similar vintage Crown Vic.

302 and 4R70W from an Explorer or Mustang. Trans will need a controller, you can change the engine to carb or get a controller that runs both.

What axle and tire are you running?

You could upgrade the 300 and get close to 200 HP for not a lot of money. You could add a performance 4 speed to that.

Budget?

Budget is wide open at this point. If I can get the old 300 running well I would like to keep it in it for restoration purposes. What all can I add to it to bump it up to the 200 mark. The tor

The torque for the 300 is great. I do like the idea of having a V8 with a smooth exhaust on it though as well. I know the ole 300s are great motors and hard to break, but the muscle is very tempting.

EFI exhaust manifolds with a 4bbl intake. Add a cam for more, although you may need valve springs on top of that.

Add long tube headers instead of EFI exhaust for a bit more, if you can find decent headers that fit your truck.

After that it's porting and more compression via new pistons and a general rebuild.
