Paint protection / rust check

Hi, I tried searching these topics instead of filling up your board but I think I’m searching wrong, sorry if this has been beaten to death over the yrs.

Fallout protection - I live in southern Ontario and from what I understand living near the steel factories we have very fine heavy metals in our atmosphere that settle on the vehicles. Depending on the vech colour you would never notice it likely as it does not rust through, it just sits on the surface, but with white you see it for sure. Over time, maybe a year or so with my previous vehicles, it looks like tiny (and I mean tiny) straight line rust specs, but they are on the surface only, you can’t even feel them but you can see them. With some effort and pumice automotive blocs, they come off fairly easily but you really have to be careful not to leave swirling rub marks, touch wood I have learned to do it, this is a daily driver not a work truck for me, 10,000km’s or less per year likely. I bought the pearl white, I must be a glutton for punishment I guess but it had every option I wanted and looked great. I’m wondering if regular waxing would make this easier for me or some kind of paint protection, although I don’t like getting caught up in all the after sale add on’s. I’ll have the truck for many years and these things will drive me nuts for sure, I know the simple solution.... different colour truck and don’t be so A type personality would help, but we are who we are

Rust Proof - I used to do Krown all the time but I’m not big on their formula these days, it drips for months instead of days and makes the driveway a disaster, the last one dripped for 4 months. With aluminium side panels on the super duty is the rust proofing as important as it used to be? I will still get some kind of treatment done but maybe just not every year like before and I’m going to research a different brand/manufacturer.

Thanks, Jason.

I would clay bar the truck frequently, then a coat of wax.

I think if you clay bar the truck a couple times a year and maybe buff it every other year to get the stubborn particles off you should be ok.

I use Fluid Film which stays wet but once you get a layer of dust on it the dripping stops, except for the areas that don't get dusted over that might drip a bit in really hot weather. Aluminum corrodes, just not like steel does and I still coat our aluminum trucks.

Ok thanks, knew I should have chose another colour, oh well, it still looks great and will be worth the work, I'll look into the Fluid Film too.

My .02...

I did "Rust Check" last October on my car. never washed the undercarriage, body only. It was parked for almost 3 months of the winter. This summer I threw our up on the lift and there was no evidence I ever did it. All the exposed metal had surface rust already. First and only winter, first in New England ever.

I've never tried fluid film, however from what I've read and talking to others it's pretty much the same.

Im planning to use NH Oil this time with my truck. It's a heavier black oil. Hopefully it holds up better.

For your paint...Get on some detailing forums or groups. There are lots of fallout removers (IronX, 3D BDX, Meguiars makes one too). I would go with a full paint correction, paint sealant and then a good wax. The most recommended combo on one of the facebook groups I frequent is Jescar Powerlock+ as a sealant and Collinite 845 wax. If you have the money have a professional detailer put on a ceramic coating.

What did you have your car coated with that didn't work? I've been using fluid film since 2011 and it due work. I was and reapply the fluid film twice a year and don't touch the underside outside of those times (might got it with some low pressure to get some mid or heavy crud off sometimes) and the coated parts are pretty much the same as they were when they come off the transport. There might be some light surface rust in hard to reach spots I missed or didn't get coated well enough but 95% of the truck is spotless.

Like I said... Rust Check. It's a direct competitor to Fluid Film, very similar, it's primarily out of Canada.

All I can tell you is this car was babied, had 53k when I bought it, not a spot of rust, never seen New England nor winter. Oil undercoated by Rust Check in October at 65k miles. Car was driven until January, parked 3 months, put on the lift in June for new tires, and I was disgusted. No evidence of oil anywhere on metal, very little on painted surfaces. Never did an undercarriage wash over the winter out of fear of washing off the oil.

I'll never use them again.

What’s right and wrong about this guy’s testing?

Getting a new 2019 KR CCLB 6.2 any day now. Deciding what, if anything to treat with.
