Got a call back from the dealer, Academy Ford in Laurel, MD, Ford told them to replace all of the exhaust valves (and related hardware) due to carbon build up. Was told the parts list was 5 page long...not sure how many parts per page. Lots of one time use nuts and bolts.

Will find out tomorrow how long it will take to get all the parts, if is longer than 1 week I'm going to pick up the truck and drive it as Ford says it should not hurt anything...and if it does I guess the parts list will go to 6 or 7 pages.

Dealer told me that Ford told them they have never seen this happen on a 2018. I asked if they thought it would affect normal non-regen driving as there are times when I discount what could be a shudder to road conditions...was told yes, it just gets worse the hotter the combustion chamber gets.

I also asked if I did anything to cause the carbon build up...they said no.

I believe I got lucky taking it to Academy as they do a lot of fleet sales and service so they didn't hesitate to take in a diesel truck. Reading on the interwebs tells me some are having issues even getting the dealer to reproduce the issue or even try.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

Edit: They are going to try and get me an F-150 loaner as this Escape is destroying my sole, but I also appreciate the loaner whatever it is.

They got the parts in and started tearing it apart...Service manager took a few pics for me at my request. They estimate that the work will be done by Tuesday next week, the book called for 2 full days, but I was told the the tech has been working on diesels for 30+ years and is very meticulous.

I had a horrible issue during regen at around 17k miles and had a bad exhaust valve on #6 and it would hit hard during regen when coming up to temp, around 1000 degrees. Felt like the front of the truck was going to shake off the road - the piston action was so violent. I drove through two regens with the ford diesel tech - a really great guy, old school, and got it to duplicate both times so he could see the #6 cylinder drop off and record it on his laptop. They had to tear the engine down to the block, lift the cab off. Made me sick to my stomach. But - all under warranty and the dealer was absolutely phenomenal (Holiday Ford in Whitesboro TX). Haven’t had a single issue since. 52k miles now. I’ll post a pic or two.
If that was out of warranty, could you just delete it and go on?

Maybe? It is definitely only an issue that I have experienced during a regen cycle but, if the exhaust valve is problematic, I would think it might foul-up somewhere down the line too, even if deleted. I don't know enough about the function of the valve during and not-during a regen cycle to know if turning the regen function off would eliminate the problem altogether. Good question though - and, it may be another knock against the emissions systems on these trucks which are a total counterproductive waste or energy and resources, but don't get me started.

I believe even in normal non-regen operations I've felt a little shudder on the highway, it feels like you are driving on a washboard road, w/really small bumps. If that makes sense.

Got the truck back this past Friday, the invoice has a lot of parts replaced. 16 exhaust valves and all the gaskets, guides and hardware associated w/that.

Got the filter status to 99%, took it out on the freeway and watched it go to 0%...no stutters, no jack hammering. Pretty smooth. Although I feel it was more of a passive regen as the % went down fairly slowly.

Looking forward to the next one.

Yes, A/C lines and radiator lines get pulled/drained/evacuated. One of the lines on the invoice was "recharge A/C".

I believe after that it's the hardware holding the cab to the chassis and a couple of wiring harnesses, maybe a steering column disconnect.
