I have a question did a engine swap in my 88 f250, when hooking AC controls backup I notice I still had power to my AC clutch on compressor when temp select control was in heat/defrost position with blower on. I search this forum and found this post (" The air conditioning compressor will operate in all modes except PANEL (vent) and FLOOR. However, the air conditioning will only function if the outside temperature is about 10C (50F) or above.") My question is there a thermostat and where is it located that keeps the clutch on compressor from coming on during cold days?
First of all, the temperature selection does not control the compressor in any way. It is only controlled by the mode lever. There used to be a thermostat on the core support (grille side) on the older trucks but my '91 does not have one. My manual says it will determine whether or not to run the compressor based on the pressure/temperature relationship of the refrigerant and this is controlled by the clutch cycle switch located on the accumulator.
Thanks, looks like all good then just didn't understand power at the clutch on AC compressor when in heat/defrost mode with blower on. Been a 2 year project restoring this 88 F250 4x4 thanks again for info.
The compressor runs in the defrost modes to dry the air out. On straight heat it will not run. FYI on mine the compressor runs on cool days unless it is around 32F or lower.
