I know this question could bring on 4 pages worth of responses with each one being different lol, I have used the search button and read up on google but I'm still co fused on 15w40 or 5w40. My 6.0 is stock with 100k miles. I have always used 15w40 in my 7.3 and never had a gave it another thought. But with this 6.0 I am reading conflicting opinions on whether or not I should use 15w40 or not. I do know I want use rotella just not sure if I should use the T6 or not. I dont pull anything and live in east tn where our winters are not all that cold. We may get a handful of single digit nights and just a little more teens. But on average I'd say our nightly lows are in the upper 20's to low 30's with a few real cold spells in between. I dont want to be switching back and forth for winter and summer, I want a year round oil. But I want what's gonna protect the engine.
I think this is one of those things that you'll have to decide for yourself. A month ago I was researching the same thing. For over 2 years I've ran T4 but I have always added archoil yo each of my oil changes. Blackstone has an issue with archoil additive. It's hard to tell if coolant is present in an oil sample. Oil additives have similar properties as coolant. This last oil change I went with T6 full synthetic. I need to check for oil loss due to burning it. PO said it seemed to burn oil when synthetic was used. But of course I have to see for myself.
The only difference I see is yes with T6 I do hear a smoother engine. The injector clatter is smoother sounding. I was worried about leaks popping up but no drips yet. I've only put about 200 miles on it since the change so I still have a ways to go before I could give my personal opinion.
I don't think it matters what you use as long as it's ford approved.
I run full synthetic 5w-40 year round. My truck runs much better with it in both the heat AND the cold.
Remember, 5w-40 does NOT mean that it is a lighter weight oil than 15w-40. It is a more stable oil in terms of viscosity. In the cold it doesn’t thicken up as much as the 15w-40 does.
I think that we all decided in the early years of the 6.0L, that Ford's oil recommendations stemmed from the fact that AT THAT TIME, Ford did not sell a 5W40 oil!
I also think that the later model year injectors were less prone to stiction so they can better withstand 15W40 being used in the winter. Clearly there are numerous people that don't have stiction issues w/ 15W40, but there is no doubt that more people experience stiction issues w/ 15W40 oil than the 5W40 users .... especially in cold climates.
