Ok. I have a 1996 with a manual 4.9. Last month I got home turned it off and it hasn’t cranked since. Drove fine up until I shut it off. I’m totally lost on what could be wrong. I replaced cap and rotor and wires(triple checked that they are in the proper order). New battery. New starter motor. New starter solenoid(engine compartment passenger side bulkhead mounted). New battery cables. I can hear the “chunk” of the starter gear trying to engage the flywheel but that’s the extent of my ignition. The motor doesn’t even turn over. Just a click and then silence. Does anyone have any idea what’s going on or what I may have done wrong? I really appreciate any help that’s offered. Thanks in advance.
step one:
put a breaker bar on the crank bolt ans see if the engine will turn, or if it is locked up.
step two:
if engine will turn, pull the starter and have it tested.
step three:
if starter tests good, have the battery tested.
New starter, new battery cables, new battery, new starter solenoid(bulkhead mounted in engine compartment), new cap/rotor, new plugs and wires.
I haven’t tried to turn the motor manually. I have been wondering if the motor is seized though. I’ll give that a try and see if the motor turns.
Just because they are new does not mean they are any good with todays junk being sold!
It is vary common to have a bad solenoid out of the box over in the 80 -86 truck area and IIRC there is a thread listing the make & part numbers of the good & bad so we know what ones to get and stay away from.
Same goes for the starters more so if it is a rebuilt starter. I don't know for your years but the 80 -86 used 2 different starters, stick or auto.
But do try and turn it over by hand because if it will not nothing you do will make it crank.

i have replaced 6 brand new fender relays in a row and all 6 were bad, the crap coming out of china these days is ridiculous.
i finally got a good one that was made in mexico.
these days i only use the stancor relay. i use them for everything. starter relay, glow plug relay on the diesels, power relay on the snow plow trucks.
it costs $100, but i will never have to ever worry about it not working. the two in my 88 diesel pickup are around 20 years old now.
if you do get motor to turn manually, do you hear fuel pump turn on when you turn key to run position, but not try to start it, you could try push/pull start it, with it being a manual, then you would know, relay or starter to look at next

Good suggestions being made but what was the reason for changing the ignition parts on a non-running (won’t crank) engine that was previously running fine?
