ZF-5 Leaking
The transmission is doing great, shifts fine and drives wonderfully.
But, and there is always a but, I have a transmission fluid leak coming from the shifter. I spoke with a local, trusted diesel mechanic about it, and he advised me that it is probably coming from the plate on top of the transmission that is held on by 4 Allen-head screws. He advised just to add a little RTV to the gasket and see if that helped.
I removed the plate as directed, and found that there was no gasket there at all. the builder put a small amount of RTV and hoped for the best I guess. I cleaned all the old RTV off, and applied a better coating off oil resistant RTV in hopes of it fixing the issue.
I'm getting less fluid, but it still leaks. The thing is, it kind of looks like the fluid is coming out of the top of the inner shifter boot. Should I try buying a gasket to see if that further stems the flow of fluid, or is there a possibility that the fluid is coming out of the boot itself? Its a new boot and doesn't have any holes that I can find.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
Taking it back to the builder is not really a preferred choice if I can fix it easily myself. They're over and hour from my house and I'd like to not pull the transmission again.
Mine weeps some from that silly rubber boot up top. I think I put five quarts in the thing.
I recall it having a metal vent when I built mine.
The shifter wasn't part of the rebuild, they just took mine off the old transmission and put it on the new one. They did replace the rubber boot at no charge, because my old one was torn and they took 7 weeks on a two week rebuild.
That boot is maybe a $10 part retail, but they left the gasket off which is ODD.
Who did the work or did they just buy it from some wholesale trans place?

No, they built a new transmission for me. My old one cracked the casing somewhat horrendously. It was a complete build of a transmission using an empty case. That being said, instead of sourcing a new shifter, they used the one that was on my old transmission. I agree that them not using a gasket is odd, I also agree that 2 months was an excessive wait time. But I paid up front, and they extended my warranty due to the extremely long build time.
The shop was Man-trans in Tallahassee, Florida. I think they're main issue is that they over-sell their workforce; They take on more work than they can handle. But the transmission is driving fine and I have no complaints about the quality of the build so far.
They were the cheapest by about $400 within a 2 hour drive, and they picked up my old transmission and delivered the new one at no additional cost to me.
