So it seems every time my wife is riding in the passenger seat the dash light comes on warning of a passive restraint fault. Once shea out of the truck its gone. Once it goes on it wont turn off unless I shut the truck off. I was thinking it was a side impact bag warning because she leaned on the door. But it seems too sensitive to be taken seriously.
Any thoughts?
I would be leaning towards an occupant weight sensor issue. Probably worth getting checked out. Sounds like the seat is detecting her but having issues with it.
Has you tried buckling the seat belt without her in the vehicle and see if the warning comes back? It should help narrow down if the issue is in the belt sensor or in the weight sensor. Either way, should probably want to have it looked at. You don't want to find out the hard way that there's something wrong with the seat belt and she's not really buckled in.
Spoke to the service dept. today. They said to try moving her around in the seat, change adjustment. Check the key switch to make sure the passenger bag is not turned off. It makes sense because first, if there was an actual fault with the air bag the light would stay on. It could be a sensitivity issue in the seat. It can differentiate between an adult and a kid. While my wife is in great shape shes not a kid. They also said its possible there would be no code if this is the issue. If messing around moving the seat and her weight around has no effect... then bring it in and they will check it for codes.
So I feel a bit better for feeling like its not truly a safety issue... Probably... but one of my problems with new vehicles in general is the overwhelming complexity. This confirms that.
