I bought the Arctic Fox 990 instead of the larger versions so I would not have to use a really long extension.
Now I wonder if I need one at all.
The center of the hitch ball is about 10 inches back from the trailer bumper. The flat deck is low and has a very long tongue. There is plenty of clearance to work the jack and attach the bars. The corner of the deck should have 5 inches of clearance to the trailer jacks if I somehow jackknifed the trailer.
Am I foolish to consider this? I would use this setup once a year to go to an offroad event. The trailer would stay attached until I get home.
I have just about the same clearance with my 9 1/2’ and boat. I just made sure that I could turn as tight as the turning radius of the truck without touching corners. I don’t use an extension, one less thing to worry about. Looks to me that you should be okay too.
Here it is on the ball. I turned a u-turn as tight as it gets no problem. And U-turns are tight with an F450.
This combo is going to work well. So glad I got the smaller camper.
I had a standard Reese weight distribution hitch for my F150 that I purchased a new shank for. It extended out enough to ensure my tailgate wouldn't hit my tongue jack when opened. Unfortunately, now that I have a camper the tailgate will have to come off when towing. I don't want to risk hitting the tailgate on tight turns. The Shank works good because you can still adjust heights it works for all my trailers.
