Straight up timeing

I'm thinking about changing the timing set on my 78 f150 351m. To straight up timeing I've read I should get a timeing set for a 1970 351c. If I do this will my stock 2 barrel still be fine or am I going to need to get a 4 berrel. And how much power dose straight up timeing add.

The stock 2bbl will be fine. It doesn't really "add" much power as much as it makes the power you already have more useable. You may feel a slight difference from the drivers seat but that's it.

If it's got over 100 thousand on the odometer, probably should be changed anyway. Water pump while your in there.

I was amazed at the difference on even a beat to death, low compression and oil pressure super high mileage 351M when I installed a straight up timing set, added dual exhaust and a 4 barrel carb and intake. Not faster, but a noticeable increase in torque, better idle quality and more usable power throughout the entire RPM range.g it slightly better MPG, most likely due to the smaller primaries of the 4 barrel and the engine breathing more freely through duals. Of course, that wasn't enough, so I went back in 6 months later with a cheap, no name brand "RV" torque cam from eBay and that really made a difference. Lots of power,.....so much so, that I got a rod knock from beating it to death a year later. Still runs and I'm still driving it though, just can't kill these old 351M/400s.

What cam did you put in it. I would like to put a cam in mine since I'll be there any way. but I don't have the extra cash now for an intake and carb. if put a cam in could I get away for a while useing my 2 barrel carb. and I'm assumeing I'll have to put new lifters and springs in. My engine has 118k on it with good oil pressure.
