tailgate plastic trim

Hey guys recently I found a ton of ants in my tailgate from a load of mulch i picked up. Now i want to get the trim pieces off to get in there better but I cant seem to figure out how to pop off the covers. I have the step in the gate and its the plastic that covers the step and also on the sides. I tried to pry it up with the plastic trim tools but it seems like its either bolted or just extremely strong clips.

Any help is good help.

Unscrew the access panel from the forward face of the tailgate.
