Odometer issues Help

Touching here

Open gap
I got my truck back from the tranny shop. 1976 Ford F250 2wd 360 with the T18 tranny Had to have all new gears, reverse and cluster, and all new bearings. Drives great now that you can shift it even if it is a little stiff getting into 3rd gear. The problem is the odometer does not advance but the speedometer is working but off by about 5 miles per hour at 50. I took it apart and found that the gear drive was not round and not touching for the numbers advance. Is there available any repair for this or does this mean a new speedometer head? I have included pictures above.

With those 3 statements, you would think that the last one would NOT be there. Did the shop say something about breaking in the trans/the 3rd gear syncro will be rough for a bit? If it is hard to get in gear, your clutch might need adjusted. Did you get THEM to install a new instrument cluster? You say "cluster" in your second statement.

As far as the odometer not working, it looks like the one gear is about to turn to dust. Does anything look "adjusted" bent/loosened and moved inside the cluster? Like around what holds the blue wheel in its position?

In your second pic I see what looks like a broken piece of white instrument cluster material. ND will be here shortly to tell us what years they are prone to turn to dust.

The main cluster gear inside the tranny was what I was referring to I didn't have them do anything to the instrument cluster. He did mention that because of the new intermediate gear and new cluster it would have to be used to get the stiffness out and if it didn't get better within 500 miles to bring it back so he could look and see if there was a problem.
As far as the plastic turning to a powder when I first got the truck 20 years ago and I took the instrument cluster out it did simply powder in my hands. Did they use that same material for the gears inside the speedometer?

Ok just wanted to ask, to clarify on the "cluster". Do not know about the gear material in the cluster. But yours sure looks like it is about to dust out. lol Does the blue odometer drive gear look good or missing some of that material? Did this problem only start after the trans shop work? If I was home I would just go grab a spare speedo cluster to look and compare.

The blue gear looks okay but don't know for sure. The speedometer didn't work for a long time because of the tranny drive gear issues so was not aware of any problems with the odometer until the tranny was repaired. I guess considering that the truck has 300,000 miles on it, as best i can tell, I should just consider a new speedometer head or another cluster.

I would think that just another speedometer assembly would be cheaper than a complete new instrument cluster.

On the other hand maybe not. $ wow. But now is the time to go from a 80 MPH to a 100 MPH. Cause we all know we need a 100 MPH one. lol

Your 76 should have a 100 MPH speedo in it.

I don't have any used 100 MPH speedo heads, but I do have a few 85 MPH heads I'd sell. I do have an NOS 100 MPH speedo head, but it wouldn't be cheap.

I suspect that one end or the other of the blue gear is worn or broken off. It is probably possible to replace just the gears with good used, but I've never been able to get the speedo needle off to allow disassembly of the speedo head to get to the gears.

Your 5 MPH off isn't too bad, the 2013 F250 I drive with electronic speedo is off that much or more. To correct you would need to change the driven gear tooth count on the speedo cable by 10%. This would be a change up or down in the count, depending on if the speedo reads fast or slow. Sometimes a new speedo head reads a little different & can correct an error as well, if you are lucky.

Instrument cluster back: 1975/79 F100/350, 1975/80 Econoline, 1978/79 Bronco.
Ford did not sell individual parts for speedometers, the entire unit had to be replaced.

But the parts were available from speedometer shops, the OP will have to locate one, then send his speedo in to have the odometer replaced or....replace the speedometer.

I have a few spares and spare parts. But I am currently on the road working for a while. I would let you probably have some parts to fix yours for the shipping cost, plus a buck or 2.
