The odometer on a truck doesn’t tell you how much wear is on the engine, the idle and engine hours do.
You cant have more idle hours than the total hours obviously, the engine hours is the total, idle hours are like you have explained quite simply engine running in park.

My work truck is a 2017 550 and has 9070 total engine hours and 8280 idle hours. Just rolled over 50,000 kms.

I wish I would have checked when I purchased the truck, but I can guarantee I haven't put anywhere near the 6 idle hours it says just in park. Based on he responses here and othe idle hour threads, there doesn't seem to be a definite answer to exactly when idle hours are logged.

I'm not sure how idle hours are calculated but I can assure you it is not just in park. My 2018 has 408 engine hours and 48 idle hours, I have never left it idling for more than a minute or so. I have also seen my idle hours climb while I'm in traffic. My daily commute home is 28 miles and it takes between an hour to an hour and a half. That is where most of my idle time comes from and the truck is never in park during the commute. I would like to see a picture of the dash on one of these trucks that show more idle hours than engine hours, I doubt it is possible.

I concur. I rarely idle in park. But do regularly idle in drive.

Sorry, I misspoke. I had a truck that had counted engine operating load hours and idle hours separate. You had to add them together to get full engine hours. On these trucks, the idle starts counting when the vehicle is stationary and not under load regardless of gear position. Obviously with our system, you can’t have more engine hours than idle hours. Sorry guys.

Not absolutely sure but I think my truck idles around 550-600 rpm, maybe less. I wonder if idle hours are calculated by a certain rpm level by the trucks computer.

Wow. It’s engine idle time. The truck has to be running and in park to accumulate these hours. Coasting and stopped at a red light do not add to these hours. Command start should add to the idle hours.
No, I was asking if it’s counting idle hours if the truck is on and the engine not running. You said truck on and in park. Just looking for clarification as I had earlier mentioned key-on engine off as possible idle time on the counter.

Glad I was able to amuse you.

Make, Model, and year of said truck? For informational purposes.

Since ford counts 25 miles for each idle hour when figuring idle hours and how many miles to oil change or fuel filter change on trucks that have a lot of idle hrs. Maybe any thing under 25 mph of speed equals idle time. Just a thought.

It was an older Mack truck. Not sure what year. Bought it at an auction for farming. Never had it insured. When I read the thread, my brain went straight to that rig. After reading a few replies, I remember that my rams and this ford do it differently. lol.

There was a thread before about when idle hours are counted. The OP in that thread figured out anytime the engine was running and not in motion was counted as idle hours. I concur with that assessment. I ordered my 2019 6.7 and it had 1 hour of idle time when I took possession of it. Now with 1500 miles on it I have 63 hours of engine time and 16 hours idle time. I do not idle my engine when I'm not driving. So to get 16 hours of idle time it must be counting time stopped at red lights and etc.

Lol. I gave the wrong information anyways. The idle hours only accumulate when the truck is not under load. Stopped at red lights while the truck is in gear counts towards idle hours. Engine has to be running, after all, it’s ENGINE idle hours. 😉 lol

Macdsl,

My math may be way off, but this looks like 92% idle time? Also, kms traveled / hours on engine = somewhere around 4mph US numbers?

That is correct, truck runs non stop as a mechanics truck all day and sometimes 24 hours a day. To say I’m impressed with how much abuse the 6.8 V10 can take is an understatement. Original engine and full powertrain.

I thought same. Did the math and it comes out to 63.29 kmph, or about 39 mph. average. Checks out. I've been letting my engine idle til it gets to at least 100 degrees F. Looking at the manual the other day, seems as if this is not required for diesels anymore? My engine to idle ratio is about 4:1 currently.
